[sailwave] Digest Number 1139

Dear Colin&Everybody,

I've been using Sailwave for more than three years and I find it really
fantastic. And it is getting better and better.

Unfortunately I found some little mistakes/problems, I hope you can solve
them soon:

1.) The Crew field is not big enough. Only the first 40 characters appear in
the crew column, and only the first 100 while publishing. Sometimes we have
10-15 persons on board and everybody wants to see his own name on the
Results sheet.

2.) I try to translate the program to Hungarian. I translated the 90% of the
locale, but I realized that some parts of the program cannot be translated:

-the items of the "Publish" menu

-texts in white or yellow fields. For example the texts in the Message
windows, texts in Edit columns window, texts in property bar, etc.

-some button-names & (all) tooltips

-all the column-names, which appear during publishing: start, finish,
elapsed, lap, corrected, BCE, BCR, Ave Speed, etc.

-the headers of the published results (Sailed:, Discards:, To count:,
Ratings:, Entries:, Scoring System:, .. for fleet, Date:, Published time of
first start:, Start:, Time: etc)

-the help file

3.) There was a very good tool in the older versions: Rating estimator. It
disappeared in ver. 1.8x. I hope it will come back soon.

Best regards.

This message reminded me of the race calculator although I'd never used
this, the need has recently come back again. I have therefore loaded an old
version of SW just to try this out and I must admit I am slightly suspicious
of the ratings produced. Try entering a rating for a boat you are familiar
with and see how it compares.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the formula is to calculate
the rating and/or if anybody knows any other formula (perhaps with less
entries) as I would like to compare notes on how to work out a rating on
boats for which there is no published handicap.

Kind regards
Terry

Terry,

It's like YR2 just generalised to any rating system - but, you will find
that the results all float relative to one another and need to be be rooted
based on something you think is a good root - e.g. a laser for PY.

PS: I am working on making this better and work over N series as well as
some other stuff including your per race rating vars.

Also doing extracted results for Mark S, and Jamie D and Submission 25 for
China etc.

Just keeping head down. V busy in work. But no sailing due to bad back :frowning:

Regards,
Colin

OK - will sort out.

You are right! - I need to somehring about that when I can. Do you have a
hungarian locale I can post on the website?

Yes, it will be - all the rating stuff needs an overhaul - it;'s too
primitive.

Tibor,

I've fixed the crew field getting truncated when publishing. It'll stay
truncated on the main view, but the main view is not intended to be a
preview of the published results, rather just a representatin nof it with
screen real-=estate taken into account.

Colin
