[sailwave] Digest Number 339

Colin,
Yes you can dump the elapsed time as far as I am concerned,
Regards
Geoff Town
Broxbourne Sailing Club.

Elaspsed time should NOT be dropped as many clubs still use the idea that
the published start time is the time that will be entered into the race
results software no matter when the race ACTUALLY started, and at some clubs
this can be quite a difference.

At West Kirby we had to take the decision that elapsed times would be the
only method of publishing results. I know it takes the RO longer if they
didn't(or couldn't be bothered) to use a stop watch to work this out, but it
does mean that competitors can see their uncorrected results upon coming
ashore, and for most can work out whether or not they beat the boat in
front.

I have sailed at many clubs were the start/finish method makes a complete
mockery of the handicap system, I myself sailed at a club and found my
elasped time calculated during this race was 5 minutes longer than I
actually sailed, it turned out that the person starting the race was using
their watch and their wife used her watch for the finish. The end results
were incorrect and I finished 4 places down the results list, with slower
boats ending up in front of me.

This is not to say that this happens everywhere, but the elasped time method
is a good check, and I would advise all race results people/race officers
and helpers to make sure that when results are entered they use this method
to ensure that we are providing our competitors with the fairest possible
way of racing.

This is bizarre!

You are saying that a stopwatch-based elapsed time is safer than using real
time.

I would have thought that no self-respecting race team uses just one
timepiece - you obviously need two for safety.

So this begs the question: How do your race teams manage to synchronise two
stop watches accurately.

For publishing results purposes Sailwave already allows you to enter a
fictional time which is independent of the real start time.

The situation you describe is best resolved by a request for redress.

Regards,

Cliff

I have not been really following all of the conversations on this as it has not been relevant to me but tthe question on timing is something we all have had problems with.

How I have solved it is with a GPS. Most people now have a GPS and we use the clock on it as the way to syncronize the time and watchs on all boats working on a course.
