Hi Philip,

Nice reading…

One comment though: I have very good
experience encoding at sea. The quickest way is to use CSV-files (Ms Excel/Open
Office). Use the “good” Sailwave template and import results, you
can always go back to a erlier state. And on most places where I am we have
contact to the Internet and can upload preliminary results directly. The RaceOffice
could be very social during the day as they have Big screens showing
preliminary results, automatic refresh on page…or just printing after a
phonecall. So “only” the little work after the races ashore

Anders,

In my email archives I have the problems encountered when the
Laser Class was using Sailwave for the Championships out in New Zealand, I
cannot remember completely what the problem was. I will dig out the information
as I also cannot remember if Colin succeed in addressing the problem.

Kind regards,

The flight column shows the current flight
assignment. If you use the View menu or the control in the toolbar to
view “flights” you can see all the assignments in the result cells and
publish it (publishing always honours the current view). It’s a good
way to see a summary of what boats have been in what flights.

Anyway, it is good practice to save “restoration points” copies.

A problem occured in EC 2008 as decisions of the Jury were not known on one day 15 minutes before deadline 21:00 to publish flights for the next day.

So I made flight assignments based on the version “after RC penalties day2” (OCS, BFD included), displayed and went to the bar.

My mate was waiting for the decisions of the Jury and received the paper at 20:59, encoded the decisions and ran flight assignment once again.

So the competitors sailed on one assignment list and the RC on another one.

The error was soon discovered as after 2 entries, the software jumped from one flight to another one, it can occur at the end of the first flight (example finishing order Red 40th - Green 1st - Green 2nd - Red 41st - Green 3rd), not in the beginning (Red 1st - Green 1st - Green 2nd - Red 2nd)

Sadly, my copy “final day2” was overwritten, but we could go back to the previous restoration point “after race6”, re-encode OCS and BFD, run flight assignments, control with the displayed lists, encode decisions of the jury.

And as the corrupted file was given on USB-key to the RC for on-boat encoding, we could give them instructions by mobile phone to restore their files.

For this reason, the log file (giving day-time-action) for updates, saving restoration points… is essential.

Note that every intermediate file was copied on 2 USB-keys, never both keys on the same person…

  sane situation.
On the contrary, we experienced very few problems with ashore encoding, even
if the job was finished later and some social drinks were lost.

Note: Penalties in points are NOT STANDARD.
