Well done Colin - you certainly struck a nerve here ;-))
Both correspondants have valid points but the surely simple approach to
timing issues is:
Count down to the Warning Signal so that everyone can synchronise their stop
watch
Do this over the radio so your pin end or Finish boat (if used) watches are
synchronised
Record the actual clock time of the start (which all good RO's should do
anyway)
Finally - pressure the RYA to provide more training activities for Race
Officers to minimise timing & all the other RM errors we see at events. The
National Conference is not enough & even at this "lofty" level there have
been significant variations on how NRO's deal with certain issues
Suspect Colin that both options need to be left in

I'm extremely confused now, but I suspect the problems is that I have not
made myself clear enough...
I'm not saying that the feedback of an elapsed time will be removed from
Sailwave (that would be wrong) - for example it would still be reflected in
each result cell and still be a column in the published race results. What
I am saying is that to enter an elapsed time as a result you would enter it
as a start time of 0 and a finish time of the elapsed time; mathematically
it's identical and simplifies the user interface. There are no side
effects WRT watches and handicaps etc that I can see.....

interested to know if your comments about Race Management Training refer
to insufficient Club Race Officer, and Open Meeting Race Officer courses
being organised, or to the standard to which the courses are run.
