Hi!
RFID (Radio Frequecy ID) is coming soon! As you say, they are going to use it in wearhouses an so on. So the price will drop!

Here in Norway, the farmers sends out their sheeps in the summer. They are walking freely in the mountains, and are brought together in the autumn. As you can see, there are some problems by finding them and maybe some predatrors too.... So, they are testing radio marking so thath the farmer can sit at home watching them on his computer!

The system on ProSail's web-site, is a littlebit advanced… You can even watch a boats move, by 30cm, during the whole race… Something for the trainers???

For us, we have to wait for prices to drop dramatically... It's far to expensive right now...

Coling need to link SW to a system like this. Then you could have to large monitors: One with all boats running, and one with results, and differences between boats....

Maybe you could arrange a venu on a football stadion, serving coctails, and two large monitors....

My research has tended to be around how to communicate electronically between the Committee Boat & 
competitors, especially when trying to accurately record class, sail number and time when finishing 
a General Handicap for 250 dinghies - VERY TESTING!! 
 
I was watching a programme on TV called Adventure Tri, which is a variation of the Triathlon, but 
competitors stop after each discipline & so need to monitor cumulative times. They use a system 
referred to as RFD? where each competitor wears a transponder round their ankle (even during the 
swimming event) and when they cross a mat containing a receiver, the data is automatically 
collected. This system is now being used in large commercial warehousing operations to track & 
locate pallet loads using a larger & more robust receiver station. 
 
The British Triathlon organisation gave me the following information: 

There are two transponder-based systems routinely used (very successfully) at triathlons : 

ChampionChip (which is used extensively in running road races as well) and HS Systems - new to 
triathlon in 2004 but well established in motor racing and cycle racing.< 
Unfortunately, my attempts to get information from these companies has been rather fruitless. 
 
Other events have overtaken this research but I still have it in mind as a possibly cost-effective 
solution to gathering starting & finishing data. Such systems are obviously out of reach of the 
smaller clubs but we run some 20+ big events each year & so the investment is likely to be 
justified. 
 
Your proposals look fantastic but at 17-18,0000 euros plus 750 euros per boat this is likely to be 
way out of reach of clubs running big dinghy events. 
 
Anyone else out there done any research on the subject??

Yes, it gives a practical starting line. This weekend we're going to have prox.140+ Optimists 
racing.... It's first time for the scorer using SW, and also flight racing... 
 
I used this first time in 2002, when we were running the European Championship for 49'ers... SW was 
not prepeared for it at that time, so I had to use RaceSail for scoring. It's a nice program too, 
but after scoring I used SW for the presentations.... It worked so good for both the raceboard and 
web... Even thoug I had to export from RaceSail and import in SW, the prelimerary results was out 
(board and web!) before the sailors entered the beach! 
 
Also new/rearranged groups/flights was finished, and out, just seconds after the jury meetings. That 
was something new then for those sailors!

We tend to refer to it as racing in flights (or something like that) 
 
It was devised to deal with large fleets when a long start line was impractical. 
I first came across it when Toppers stopped using a gate start & needed a practical way of 

using 

fixed start lines. 
The Topper event I recently did was for 135 boats & it made managing the start line so much 

easier. 

 
A variation on flights is when there is a Qualification series (quite often used for larger 
asymmetric events such as 29er & 49er) where the flights are set for the day & reassigned for 

the 

next day, based on end of day positions in the Qualification series. 
 
I know Colin enquired some time ago about the various types of flight racing, so no doubt we 

will 

see the system being refined in future releases. I guess he will appreciate any feedback you 

can 

give after the weekend as not many SUG members have come across the need for flights.

So, what do you call this kind of racing? In Norway we call it group racing, since every flight 
consists of two groups. Its not that much used, because you should have a number of boats to use 

it.

Yes, you use the Tools + re-arrange (don't forget to select that flight only) 
I used the tool first to move places up or down & then changed the DSQ to a position, so that 

it 

was 
not changed. 
 
Colin is aware of this, which occurs (I think) due to the fact that you have chosen to permit 

more 

than one 1st, 2nd etc. 
 
For the first race, I sorted by finishing position to make sure that I had 2 of each 
Also learnt after the first mistake, to do regular backups so that I could go back a race if 
necessary

Hi! This weekend we're going to have flights in an Optimist event, and 
I suddently discovered that: 
If I Score a DSQ, after finishing all boats by sailnumberwizard, then 
the actual boat gets the correct score... But all the other boats are 
not "moved up". Actually SW leaves a hole in the list in one flight. 
 
To get around it I need to use Tools+ Rearrange recorded places. Is it 
a bug?
