[sailwave] Linux & MacOS Sailwave v26-0-0 and Newer

Hi SUG Members especially Mac Users of Sailwave,

A while ago, I wrote that I thought Sailwave v2-26-0 and newer

would not run using WineBottler I was wrong.

I have been able to try Sailwave v2-28-1 on MacOS High Sierra

with all latest patches using WineBottler v1.8 [Stable] and
WineBottler v2.0 [Development]. I am pleased to report that
Sailwave v2-28-1 works with the small amount of testing I have
done so far - score series and publish results. I need to test
more things including seeing if results upload to World Sailing
can work using the same ‘trick’ as on Linux systems.

Something that I would appreciate, from a Mac user with more

experience than me, is how to to create an icon in Launcher and/or
Application folders with the Sailwave icon and necessary commands
to run Sailwave using WineBottler. I found some instructions at
WineHQ under the MacOS FAQ but they are for vanilla WINE
downloaded from WineHQ and don’t work for WineBottler.

I also plan on testing the native WINE download from WineHQ and

using the HomeBrew WINE wrapper with the plan being to document
all three ways of running Sailwave under WINE.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi,Linux & MacOS SUG members,

Linux

Done a quick test of Sailwave v2-27-0 and it works for

the minimal things tried so far, on my

  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS VM [Virtual Machine] running WINE 3.0

  • openSUSE Tumbleweed desktop running WINE 4.1
Sailwave v2-26-0 and newer will run on Linux systems with
at least WINE v3.0 and newer.

Sailwave v2-26-0 and newer will not run on systems using

WINE 1.6.x.

MacOS

Having looked at the WINEBottler site for WINE on MacOS

it is still a long way behind indicating that WINE1.8.6 is
the stable version, with WINE2.0 as development version.
This means, in my opinion, for Sailwave users running on
MacOS systems using WINEBottler that the latest version of
Sailwave they can use is v2-25-11. I am more than happy to
be corrected by someone with access to a MacOS system.

After a quick Internet search, there are other ways to

get WINE on a MacOS system which Mac users may like to
look at:

  • Homebrew - which appears to use the latest releases of

WINE and make it easy to keep WINE up to date. See for the information to install HomeBrew.
  • WINEHQ - follow the instructions to install WINE at

    the WINEHQ web site []
and again can make the latest version of WINE available.
Look forward to feedback/comments from MacOS users who
have used, or might be able to test, these alternatives.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Jon,

I will test v2-27-0 more fully under Windows 10 and

Linux but can say that both work initially after very
quick test.

The very quick Linux test was my openSUSE Tumbleweed

which is fully patched and running WINE v4.1. I found
previously when testing v2-26-2 of Sailwave it will
not work under WINEv1.6, but do not know at what
version of WINE between v1.6 and v4.0 it might start
running.

Will check out what versions of WINE my Linux Mint

and Ubuntu systems are running tomorrow.

What are changes from v2-26-2, please?

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Matt,

You don't say what version of Sailwave you

are using.

If you are using a version less than 2.25.11

please install this from the Sailwave Website

Once you have 2.25.11 please upgrade it to

2.27.0 by downloading the following Sailwave.exe

https://www.dropbox.com/s/20vqgcw8xpn4toz/sailwave.exe?dl=1

Then overwrite the existing Sailwave.exe in

the C:\program files(x86)\Sailwave\Sailwave.exe
with the one you just downloaded.

This has quite a lot of updates to the CSV

import and additionally has checks to prompt you
when importing.

If you could give this version a go and let

me know if you still have any issues

Regards

Jon

Hi

I'm having issues importing via CSV

in the club environment as its almost
too complicated and prone to error for
anyone without tons of time spent on
Sailwave

The first issue is mapping, I can

only setup the CSV so well before
Sailwave wont recognise the column
name automatically and you have to map
it manually (or it just gets it wrong
in the first place, even worse for the
people who have little experience.)
The CSV isn’t likely to change so
can’t the mapping save to previously
assigned cells?

The other problem is importing also

overwrites data without any checks.
For example if I wanted to import race
2 times and laps but accidentally put
race 1 in the race no. column, the
results for race 1 would be
overwritten. when you’re doing 30 race
series and you do this it becomes
difficult to find and rectify the
effected race.

Kind Regards

Matt

Huw,

Last year i moved away from Wine Bottler as i found it “unreliable” in how successful i was in getting Sailwave to operate on my Mac.

I always keep my Mac OSX up to date, and very rarely miss an update of the OS.

Just over a year ago i moved to Crossover and although it is not free i feel more comfortable with knowing i have an environment that i can relay on for the club.

Just as a bit of background i operate Mac Mini’s in the home environment and I have Parallels installed which i have installed with Sailwave, but when i am out on and about and i need Sailwave on my Mac Books i am not about to invest in a second version of Parallels, hence the test of Wine Bottler and now Cross over.

OK All that said in Crossover i still have the issue that i believe you have in that i cannot create a Sailwave icon to install on the desktop to simply click to run Sailwave.

Sorry cannot be more help in your request for info on this, however with Crossover i just need to 2 clicks on the Mac and i have Sailwave up and running.

Hi Huw,

If you Get Info (right click and choose Get Info) on a file you can see the icon for it at the top of the Info window. A single click on the icon will select it. This can now be copied and/or pasted (cmd C, cmd V). Therefore, if you copy the Sailwave icon from elsewhere it can then be pasted into the Info Window. I did this for my Wine Bottled version of Sailwave prior to my MacBook being stolen (insert sad face) and having to go to a ChromeBook instead.
