[sailwave] medals race example

Amazing!

A(big) fault in Medal race will be crucial.

Without double point in Medal Race, SailNo 5504 would have been 4th, instead of 8th (or 2nd with low point).

No Black flags please!!

Here's a simple example of the devestating impact a medal race can have (if<BR>
I've done it right!).<BR>
<BR>
This is normal App A scoring for the elapsed.blw file in the examples<BR>
folder:-<BR>
<a href="http://results.sailwave.com/e1.htm">http://results.sailwave.com/e1.htm</a><BR>
<BR>
And this is the same series scored with the last race being a medal race<BR>
with 12 boats eligible to sail (I picked 12 because there happened to be 12<BR>
boats in the last race).<BR>
<a href="http://results.sailwave.com/e2.htm">http://results.sailwave.com/e2.htm</a><BR>
<BR>
Notice how the boat that was second now has to carry a non-discardable<BR>
DNF... Ouch.<BR>
<BR>
Unfortunately there are no ties, but it does seem to work OK when there are.<BR>

Hi Martin/Colin
I think this is exactly what ISAF wanted to achieve.
The logic presumably is that if a boat cannot finish the last race, there is no way that it should
be able to win a medal.

There are a number of flaws in this argument of Final Medal race which have been exhausted in other
forums.
The sad thing is, that this is a compromise which is trying to satisfy the traditional sailor who
argues that a series should be all races since day one & the sprint/knock out person who argues in
favour of formats similar to the 100m in athletics & others.

The one message is compromise very rarely produces a good outcome.

IOC demand exciting competition, where the medallists are easily determined by the viewing public,
because this brings money in! In sailing we need to accept that our sport has to produce the goods
or we will get kicked out!

This new format does not mean that we must all change.
The 'Olympic format' is just what it says - for Olympic & similar types of events.
The rest of the world can continue racing in the traditional manner.

I cannot see what is wrong with showing the world how exciting sailing can be rather than some
current TV programmes which bore people to death listening to two experts debate the merits of two
boats sailing side by side & one taking 5 minutes to overtake the other.

My vote for the Olympics goes to Heats, Quarter, Semi & Finals (depending on numbers) with the slate
wiped clean after every round. On the last day we can have top ten race(s), 11th - 20th race(s),
21st - 30th race(s) etc

I wonder if anyone disagrees with me ??? :wink:

Regards
Ralph

From the events I go to I would expect them to go to a last race winner takes all.

The earlier races just select the last 10.
