Sailwave Messages....

I suppose the flurry of messages this morning is because with the changes to Yahoo groups the Sailwave mailing list no longer has a digest option. At least that option has disappeared for me. Is it time to consider an alternate platform?

Google Groups looks the best choice for me. It stills operating with the daily summary option.

Jim, this change, daily digest, does not appear to have been broadcast. I will talk with Jon and Huw to see what the best option is

Simon

"Dear Group Moderators and Members,

Last month we notified you of the changes coming to Yahoo Groups that better align with user habits, and today we are providing an update to guide you through the next steps of the transition. Yahoo Groups is not going away - but we are making adjustments to ultimately serve you better. We are amazed at the vibrant community you’ve created through Yahoo Groups and we want to make sure you feel supported as we introduce these changes.

The following changes were made since our last communication:

• Users can now only join a Yahoo Group through an invite or group request approval by the Group Moderator.
• New Groups can’t be public. They can only be private (not listed in Groups directory, membership by invitation only) or restricted (listed in Groups directory, membership requests must be approved by a Group Moderator).
• Members must share all content via email, and can no longer upload or host new content on the Yahoo Groups website itself.

The following changes will be made on December 14, 2019:

• Public groups will no longer exist. All existing public Groups will become restricted Groups that require Group Moderator approval to join.
• Any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed.

If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or stored within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing the Groups Download Manager at this link. Once you provide your preferred email address, we will send you a confirmation of your download request and notify you once the download is complete.

You will receive a link to a downloadable zip file via email for each of your Groups organized into a separate folder. Download time varies depending on the amount of information and file size.

If your download request is made by 11:59pm PST on Saturday, December 14, 2019, your content will not be deleted until your download is complete. We are unable to accommodate any download requests made after this deadline.

This is the final reminder to download your content. You can find additional information about the upcoming changes here.

We have worked extensively with our customer support team to develop recommendations for tools that can help you with any download issues. See help article here.

We have watched the evolution of Yahoo Groups with awe, as we grew to a community of millions with over 10 million Groups. Every day, we witness the power of community and shared passions, and our mission is to provide a platform for the strong connections people make with each other around their interests.

We thank you for being part of the Yahoo Groups community and look forward to continuing to provide ways for you to connect with one another about your shared interests and passions.

Sincerely,
The Groups Team"

On my Browsers i cannot even get the option to open a new thread ???

But
what concerns me even more is Jon appears to be very quiet on this subject… is there an issue here? i also sent him an email direct and he did not respond, do we have a bigger issue that Yahoo changes???

apologies
for being direct…

Hi John

Sorry, I haven’t seen your direct email.

I’ve been busy with various things but have also been doing a lot of Sailwave support and Demo’s as well as at events scoring. In addition to my main work which has had some urgent work lately.

The User Group has always been run by Simon independent of Sailwave but I’m happy to work with Simon or take over the forum if that is what he wants to do. I’ve had an offer to create a forum for us which I will be investigating. There is not a simple solution (That I’m aware of).

Support is always available through the chat on the Sailwave site and the Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/sailwave/

Jon,

Really appreciate the time you have invested in this project.

Forgive me if I was a bit direct

But I felt your missing involvement in the recent threads about the future of the Group was of concern

Great to hear from you

And again many many THANKS

Thank You

Here’s something on topic from a distribution list for amateur radio. A key consider driving choices is whether material on Yahoo needs to be moved or just dropped.

Yahoo Groups Shutdown has Ham Radio Interest Groups Seeking to Save Content

Yahoo Groups, which has hosted a considerable number of ham radio interest groups over the years, is shutting down. All previously posted content on the site became unavailable in mid-December, but Yahoo is processing requests to download content until January 31, 2020.

Yahoo also has provided group administrators (“admins”) a way to export data ahead of that deadline.

Groups will continue to live on in some limited fashion, but all groups will become private, and nearly all of the functionality that made them popular in the first place will disappear.

New platforms such as Groups.io, Facebook, and Google are looking to assume the role that Yahoo Groups is stepping away from. Groups.io charges fees to migrate content onto its platform, however, and Facebook and Google lack the ability to import content at all. With Groups.io as the most likely successor platform, many admins have assumed the migration expense and relocated group content so it would not be lost.

I would be willing to chip in money to help move content to whatever platform is selected.

Thanks,
