I could be factitious and say that our prizes are so valuable that we want
to make sure that they have been earned before we give them out!
In a series a half plus one of the number of races need to be sailed to
qualify for the prizes. (e.g. in an 18 race series 10 need to be sailed).
Why? I can't be emphatic - the Club and the rules have been around a long
time - but I would guess it is to encourage turn out. I think if the
Sailing Committee was asked to re-consider the point they would want to keep
the rule because it probably does contribute to keeping the numbers up.
Mentally it is probably easier to plan a diary to include ten races rather
than thinking if I don't sail I'm going to incur an unknown number of points
plus 1 (or 999). The difference may be subtle, but focusing on a minimum
number does encourage people to turn up.
Interestingly enough I was just about to post a message about qualification
requirements because I'm a bit confused by it.
What is the idea behind qualification? is it just to encourage turnout? I
ask because it's not part of Appendix A and there are other (easier) ways to
achieve the same thing.
Why move away from Appendix A is I guess what I'm asking... Is it because
Appendix A is inadequate for long series. Any feedback/insight from the
group appreciated.

can tell has the same effect as a qualification requirement.

In the short term you could do the following - which implements your SIs
(apart form DNC) but not using the same words...
1. Set a discard profile of 0,0,1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8 for an 18
race series - i.e. 10 to count if 18 are sailed.
2. Score DNC as a very high value (so that 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,DNC can't win).
3. Score the series.
4. Mark those that didn't qualify according to your SIs in the notes field -
they should all be at the bottom of the series.
As far as I can see it's mathematically identical to actually implementing a
qualification requirement - which I am shying away from (I seem to have a
bee in my bonnet about it...) because it's not in Appendix A.
NB: In your SIs, when do you remove non-qualifiers from the series - before
scoring it or after scoring it? After would be easier from my POV. Would
you like to see non-qualifiers in the series results?
I am considering using Sailwave and I support strongly the principle of
sailing half the series to qualify for the reason you gave.
On a separate issue can Sailwave include average points for Race Officer
duty & attendance at an Open Meeting, also to include these as a qulifying
score?
Pardon my ignorance these may become clear when I start to use it in anger!

there are now 4 ways to get an average score:-
average of all races
average of all races before the race in question
average of all non-DNC races
average of all non-discarded races (as of last night)
The last one is possible because the average of all non-discarded scores can
never be less than any one discarded score. I think.

capability, I think you should have said 'MORE THAN (normally)' not less
than in your last sentence.
If a competitor has a score which is DNE (discard non excludable), it could
be that the average points is greater than any discard.
