[sailwave] Need some caculating help...

Well, it looked OK to me until I found that I had to make a trick.... Looks to me that my problem was that when selecting "High Point" then the Calulated point was devided by the weighting....

So, why not let the whole formula, and calculating, happen in the "Scoring System". It could be done by having the Weighting as a variable for use in Scoring System window.

Another irritating thing: When I point on a field, I get a help text. But it is visible only for a short while! I want it there so that I can read it all, and think about what I'm reading! e.g. I want i to stay as long I'm pointing at it!

regards

Hi Martin,

I think you've come across the weighting bug in Sailwave; it'll be fixed for
the next release. Agree re: usbility of the expressions; they are very
powerful but very unfriendly; unfortunately a common mix. Let me know if
you have ideas for improvement. My usual approach is to get something in
there that works and may be fairly 'low-level' and then iterate towards a
more elegant user interface...

Hi!
Sorry about my bad explanation.

The Laser Class are responsible for ranking of the sailors. They
use the formula below:

("Number of competitors" - finishingposition + 1) * Category = rank pts.

Finishing position is actually the rank in a weekend race.

I got some help from Mike Butterfield, to make the Category work.
But still: It's not good enough, because of userfriendlieness....
It's not logical to me...
So, here is a closer description from me, and the solution from Mike:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi!
I've been looking for a solution for the Norwegian Laser club, to have a
ranking system like:

("Number of competitors in race" - finishingposition + 1) *
Category = rank
pts.

Category varies from regatta to regatta, and can be 1 to 4.

This points out to be a "high point system" because if you wins a regatta
with 20 boats and weight/category=4, you should have (20-1+1)*4= 80pts.
Number 2 should have (20-2+1)*4=76 pts

So, I tried to use "custom high point defined by a list of
expressions" set
to: s-p+1. Then I set weight in each regatta, but a high weight
gave a low
point..?? So, I found out that for High point systems, SW divides points
with the weight.... And multiplies for low point systems... Is
this correct?
I tought it should have been the other way around.... Anyway, I
could have
solved my problem if I was alowed to divide by 0.25 i.e. set the
weighting
to 0.25. But, I was not allowed to make the weighting lower than 1..?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use the expression you have and multiply by 24.

Then set the weighting of the races Edit Race

to 24 for factor 1
12 factor 2
8 factor 3
6 factor 4

Mike Butterfield
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You may look at it, if you agree with me!

Anyway, here in Norway it now seems like SW's popularity is
growing. Both the Optimist club, Laser Club and Europe club are
looking at SW. I'trying to help as good as I can....

regards, martin

Hi Martin,

Yes that's thw weighting but and you're right having some variables that
refer to various parts of the system for use in expressions would be good.
I intend to splice LUA into Sailwave at some point which allow users to
write extensions (in a VisualBasic like way) which will then add the freedom
to anything you like.

Another irritating thing: When I point on a field, I get a help
text. But it is visible only for a short while! I want it there
so that I can read it all, and think about what I'm reading! e.g.
I want i to stay as long I'm pointing at it!

Apparently this period is defined by windows and can be set by the user but
I've never found it. Perhaps it can be set in one of their toiys like
TweakUI.
