[sailwave] New user to Sailwave having some problems

In an earlier email I outlined three problems I was having as a
new user of Sailwave. As I noted earlier, I wanted to recalculate
our 2008 series standings in order to evaluate a high point scoring
system. Our series standings represent 18 events with a total of
14 participants. Each event had multiple races ("heats" as they
are called for RC sailing), ranging from 5 to 13 heats. For 2008,
events ranged from 5 to 8 skippers. I entered only the season
results into Sailwave as a series.

The first problem I had with Sailwave was a persistent error
message "is not in a start for race". The solution was to edit
each race and add a new start. I was not aware that this was
necessary, but it did fix the problem. Each race now reads:
Start 1 All competitors Place

I commented that I felt this would be a good default value when
starting a series from scratch. Calum Polwart commented that it
was a default value for him. I have checked my copy again, and
it is not a default for my copy. My copy was a fresh install of
V2.00 build 6, running under XP Pro with SP 3. Perhaps this
lack of default start condition is new to this build?

The second problem was that I could not find a way to have DNC
scores ignored. Calum Polwart correctly noted that this issue
does not effect final scoring after throwouts, but it does boost
the total score before throwouts. As long as the final score
after throwouts is correct, I can tweak values for DNC as needed.

The third problem I had was largely solved by use of the OOD code,
so that we could award a 2nd place incentive score to those that
helped run one or two events. This proved to be a bit tricky
when experimenting with Rinderle B or Chips high point scoring.
I settled on evaluating our event participation which ranged
from 5 to 8 skippers. I chose to use fixed values for OOD
corresponding to second place values for 5 participants, resulting
in 65.1 for Rinderle B, and 82.1 for Chips 3. I used the method
"points for place plus N" for ODD, where place was zero and N was
2 for low point, 65.1 for Rinderle B, and 82.1 for Chips 3.

So, it has been a learning experience for me, and Sailwave does
a good job of calculating the high point scoring systems. Will
we use a high point system for our season standings? I don't
know. It does not seem to make much difference in standings for
most of the season standings, and careful adjustment of DNC values
can result in a low points scoring system with identical rankings.

I hope this information may be of some help to others,

Would be worth someone confirming that - I'm on 2.0 build 4 at the moment,
