[sailwave] Olympic format Add.Q

Thanks, Mike.

We're goint to use this format for the Norwegian Nationals this year....

But I've been wondering: If you use the Low point system, and the final (last race with 10 boats) counts double points..... It doesent sound good to me at all, unless you have big classes... If it was HALF the points..

I cannon see the problem with the double points.

As all the none trophy boats get DNC it does not affect say the Gold Fleet standings.

Do not forget it is the same for all boats.

Ist gets 2 second 4 points.

Thos overwhelms the earlier score to make the last race more important.

Hi, Mike!

What is the minimum fleet size for this to be effective?

If totally you have 15 boats, then a DNC will be 16 points. Last place in the Gold Fleet will be 20 points…

So you need minimum 20 boats…

This will not be a “olympic case”. I was just thinking about small classes here… The format will not fit…

Go to the ISAF web mage, officials, then managment and organisation.

The full details of the Olympic Format are not published.

The seriese to date carries points over.

The last race (Trophy race) counts double points, and in not
discardable.

10 boats in final race.

Addendum Q

Score whole of last fleet in one file

In last race OCS, RTD etc based on the number of boats in the final round

(Gold Fleet) Not the 10.

Boats for the final round (less the 10 in the Medal Race) are scored as
DNC.

This they always come behind the medal boats.

i think this coveres it.

The Olympic Champions will be decided after a final 10-boat race, judged on the water and carrying a weighted double points score.

1. Regatta Format

An 11 race series (a 16 race series for the 49er).

A Medal Race will be scheduled on the day designated for each classs medal ceremony, even if the full schedule has not been completed by that day.

The top 10 placed boats advance to the Medal Race. All boats advancing will be required to compete in the Medal Race.

On the water umpiring will be used in the Medal Race.

This format will apply to all test events and the 2008 Olympic Regatta (for all classes).

2. Scoring System

There will be one discard for the series score but the Medal Race shall not be discarded.

Competitors will carry their series scores (ie total of race scores after discard) through to the Medal Race.

Race scores for the Medal Race will be doubled (ie 2 points for first, 4 points for second, and so on) and added to the series score.

Any series tie after the Medal Race will be broken in favour of the boat finishing higher in the Medal Race.

If the Medal Race is not completed, medals will be awarded based on the series score for all the prior races (in the normal way).

If totally you have 15 boats, then a DNC will be 16 points. Last place in the Gold Fleet will be 20 points...

So you need minimum 20 boats....

This will not be a "olympic case". I was just thinking about small classes here... The format will not fit...

I cannon see the problem with the double points.

As all the none trophy boats get DNC it does not affect say the Gold Fleet
       standings.

Do not forget it is the same for all boats.

Ist gets 2 second 4 points.

Thos overwhelms the earlier score to make the last race more important.

Hi Mark
Where did you get this text from??

Martin, You may need to be careful about using 'this format' for your Nationals
As far as I am aware, there are a number of documents going round about the medals format etc.
With some official ie Appendix LE which includes Addendum C & Appendix Q.

The rest we need to be careful about (subject to what Mark's reply is from above)
Mike Butterfield has a CD which has recently issued to IROs & contains advice to ROs re the new
system
Mike is also trying to find out what is official & what is experimental

Regards
Ralph

The Olympic Champions will be decided after a final 10-boat race, judged on
the water and carrying a weighted double points score.

1. Regatta Format

An 11 race series (a 16 race series for the 49er).

A Medal Race will be scheduled on the day designated for each classs medal
ceremony, even if the full schedule has not been completed by that day.

The top 10 placed boats advance to the Medal Race. All boats advancing will
be required to compete in the Medal Race.

On the water umpiring will be used in the Medal Race.

This format will apply to all test events and the 2008 Olympic Regatta (for
all classes).

2. Scoring System

There will be one discard for the series score but the Medal Race shall not
be discarded.

Competitors will carry their series scores (ie total of race scores after
discard) through to the Medal Race.

Race scores for the Medal Race will be doubled (ie 2 points for first, 4
points for second, and so on) and added to the series score.

Any series tie after the Medal Race will be broken in favour of the boat
finishing higher in the Medal Race.

If the Medal Race is not completed, medals will be awarded based on the
series score for all the prior races (in the normal way).

      Hi, Mike!

What is the minimum fleet size for this to be effective?

If totally you have 15 boats, then a DNC will be 16 points. Last place
in the Gold Fleet will be 20 points...

So you need minimum 20 boats....

This will not be a "olympic case". I was just thinking about small
classes here... The format will not fit...

I cannon see the problem with the double points.

As all the none trophy boats get DNC it does not affect say the Gold
Fleet
        standings.

Do not forget it is the same for all boats.

Ist gets 2 second 4 points.

Thos overwhelms the earlier score to make the last race more
important.

Hi Ralph et.all!

I do want to be careful! I just reads what ROs are writing in SIs, and try to prepare for that…

Regarding all this “olympic” and Addendum/appendix Q stuff, it looks to me that it is the “on the water Umpiring” and a “final race” that are the real subject. Don’t think ROs have been thinking about scoring and the conclusion to that…

My replies to these latest statements about this format, was made to make myself thinking. And maybe someone elses too…

Feedback is good! Thanks!

Martin

Hi Mark
Where did you get this text from??

Martin, You may need to be careful about using ‘this format’ for your Nationals
As far as I am aware, there are a number of documents going round about the medals format etc.
With some official ie Appendix LE which includes Addendum C & Appendix Q.

The rest we need to be careful about (subject to what Mark’s reply is from above)

A Medal Race will be scheduled on the day designated for each class’s medal
ceremony, even if the full schedule has not been completed by that day.

The top 10 placed boats advance to the Medal Race. All boats advancing will
be required to compete in the Medal Race.

On the water umpiring will be used in the Medal Race.

This format will apply to all test events and the 2008 Olympic Regatta (for
all classes).

Hi, Mike…
Please enlight me again: What is the point of doubling the points?
It will not make any difference, or ??

   Hi, Mike!

What is the minimum fleet size for this to be effective?

If totally you have 15 boats, then a DNC will be 16 points. Last place

in the Gold Fleet will be 20 points…

So you need minimum 20 boats....

This will not be a "olympic case". I was just thinking about small

classes here… The format will not fit…

I cannon see the problem with the double points.

As all the none trophy boats get DNC it does not affect say the Gold

Fleet
standings.

Do not forget it is the same for all boats.

Ist gets 2 second 4 points.

Thos overwhelms the earlier score to make the last race more

important.

     Thanks, Mike.

We're goint to use this format for the Norwegian Nationals this

year…

But I've been wondering: If you use the Low point system, and the

final
(last race with 10 boats) counts double points… It doesent sound
good to
me at all, unless you have big classes… If it was HALF the points…

    Hi Colin

Mike is away this weekend but will obviously reply when he gets back.

A Powerpoint presentation at the last IRO conference says "only top ten ... progress to Medals race"
In your example therefore, normal tie-breaking rules would apply & two of the 50 point boats would
    be packing up early :frowning:

    Regards
    Ralph

    Hi, Mike!

What is the minimum fleet size for this to be effective?

If totally you have 15 boats, then a DNC will be 16 points. Last place in
the Gold Fleet will be 20 points...

So you need minimum 20 boats....

This will not be a "olympic case". I was just thinking about small classes
here...

    Thanks, Mike.

We're goint to use this format for the Norwegian Nationals this year....

But I've been wondering: If you use the Low point system, and the final
(last race with 10 boats) counts double points..... It doesent sound good to
me at all, unless you have big classes... If it was HALF the points..

I have no way of knowing!

I would assume they would break the tie and use the first 10 at the moment.

I have seen no form of sailing instruction that would allow more than 10.

In match racing there is even provision with thie to go to the flick if a coin.

    Hi Mike (B),

In the pathological situation whereby the points prior to the medal race
were something like: 20,23,34,36,40,42,43,48,50,50,50 would 11 boats sail
    in the medal race?
