SailWave / Portable Application

Can you not solve the problem by using logmein or similar?

Regards

Chris

Hi Colin,

I think that it could be a good/great idea to port Sailwave to a
portable application as PortableApps (portableapps.com) ALL ON A USB
STICK!

Firefox/Thunderbird/Open Office/Sailwave a complete package...

Hey Colin,

That site leads you down a semi-commercial path to portable apps. The real point is that the app leaves windows, and the PC it is running on alone, and only saves stuff to it’s “install” directory, usually the portable media it is running from or the directory it is running from. It should not require a traditional windows install. One good example is uTorrent. It runs as a single exe. I think it stores it’s saved configuration info in an ini.

If I were writing a portable app:

  1. I would try to make it into a single windows exe. If I needed more files I would make them run from the same directory as the exe or a child of the same directory as the exe.

  2. Any state information would be stored in the same directory as the exe or a child of it.

  3. It wouldn’t touch the registry.

  4. It wouldn’t leave traces behind in tmp directories etc…

When you do this you end up with an app that is… “portable”. You can keep it on a thumb-drive, borrow computers, and not need to worry. You might take a look at the wikipedia entry for portable apps.

I thing that the idea of portable app. is that do not have to ‘install’ the software.

Just copy files to somwhere and after that you can run the software.

So all the information what the software needs are in files not in registery.

Does the SailWave instalation modify windows registery?

Jamie, llpo - OK I geddit  It would not take
much to make it so - as an optional ‘install’ - I don’t want to
universally do it because people will still install into program files
and then have problems with write access, which is why I put those
alternative folder locations in the Global options.

Presumably I put a zip file on the web or something - it that right…
and prople just grab that and unzip it - it that right…?

Hi Colin

All that is necessary I believe is to make sure you don't use any registry settings and that all file addressing is relative to the main application. Then users can install on their main machine, and then copy onto a stick which they can take onto any machine and Sailwave will run.

cheers
Tony
