Sailwave - Ratings Button

Hi all fellow Sailwave users,

Is my installation or has the latest versions of Sailwave lost the Ratings
file button and also the capability to update all competitors following
changes to the ratings file? Or have I missed some comment somewhere that
this was being removed?

I am also seeing strange behaviour when adding a new competitor and
selecting a class from the drop down list, it now longer is in an
alphabetically sorted order. Additionally classes do not seem to show in
the list but when I go to the ratings file and open it with Excel the class
I wanted is there!

This appears to be when adding competitors to an existing series.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw
There is a button in the Global Options to open the ratings folder but the rest seems to have gone!
Colin will need to reply

Re adding new competitor, mine (1.76) seems to be working OK, in spite of above.
Classes are in alpha order in the drop down list.

Not quite sure what your list problem is, as you say that the list is no longer in an alphabetically
sorted order (but still visible in another order??) but then go on to say that they don't show at
all?

Sorry if I am stating the obvious but have you installed the version to the correct directory?
I have set up a development directory to test the latest releases.
When installing, if I double click on the development directory the new version is then installed
into a Sailwave sub directory within the development directory.
Sometimes I forget to delete the Sailwave sub directory & then seem to lose some of my basic data

Regards
Ralph

Ralph,

Sorry but I did not say that they don't all not show. What is happening is
that some classes are not listed when I want to select them from the drop
down list but they are in the ratings file when I open it in Excel!

I am not as cautious as you in installing newer versions! I just install

Hi Huw

Opened up this year's Tiger Trophy files (processed in 1.58) & without checking every class in the
drop down list, it generally looks as though the dropdown consists of
- all the numeric classes (29er, 505 etc), followed by
- the alpha classes in my series (Albacore to Solo)
- all the alpha classes included in my .csv ratings files

The other change is that the .csv files are all in upper case but the New Competitor drop down list
is in lower case

When I create a new file in 1.76, the list is as per the .csv files but in lower case

Is your list coming out the same?
If so, I suspect that this is over to Colin

I have changed the title to make it stand out more for Colin

Regards
Ralph

Hi Huw,

The update rating menu item is now an option in a scoring system so that you
can easily score by N different rating systems - i.e. cvreate N scoring
systems, each with a different rat sys and then tick the 'update competitor
ratings' box for each. You can then score-publish for each without the
faffle of manually updating the ratings.

There are some lower case issues that need sorting out, which I'll do for
the next release.

Instead of Copy and Pasting results from Sailwave into Excel, I find the
following procedure much Easier.

From within Excel, Open >File
Type in the file name "http://results.sailwave.com/ark.htm"
After file is opened Set Column width on those columns that require this
(Column C in this example)
Now do a print preview. Then (within print preview) click setup.
At the scaling click "Fit to", and enter "1" page(s) wide by "20" pages tall
(then click ok)
Everything in this example now fits on three pages.

Now (still in Print Preview) Click on Margins
Now to increase the font, simply move the left and right margins as far to
the side as possible.
Check the document over and also adjust width of columns that appear to wide
as this will also increase font size. If you have any columns not needed,
you can hide them by simply dragging the column to show zero width.

Now close Print preview, go File> Page Setup>
Put the cursor in "Rows to repeat at top" and then click on row 8 (in the
background) with your mouse.
Then click OK

Now delete any unwanted or blank rows out of your spreadsheet that you do
not need
Go back to print preview, Set top and bottom Margins as near to top and
bottom as possible.

I managed to get page as per example above down to two pages.

If the Letters are still too small, then simply select "Setup" > "Page" and
select "Landscape"

This made the example above fit on 4 pages, more than large enough to read
and I do not think there is any way of getting it any bigger unless you go
to two pages wide.

Hope this helps
Regards
Terry

Good Morning Ralph,

Good idea to highlight the issue more prominently. Thanks for taking the
time to help and the suggestions, it is appreciated.

I had noticed that all the classes were completely lowercase in the drop
down list box, but not think that worth including.

I have 4 rating files in the Ratings folder: Dinghies (PN 87 ratings),
Keelboats (PN 10 ratings), Multihulls (PN 13 ratings), Multihulls (SCHR 152
ratings).

I have continued looking at the my problem and seem to have narrowed it down
to being exhibited in two series files of mine and not new series. New
series exhibit the listing sort order you have described and I would have
intuitively expected. I will continue researching.

Kind regards,
Huw

Colin,

Thanks for the response, I had missed the check box on the rating tab of the
scoring system. It was more clear I found when the inherit check box was
cleared and the options not greyed out. I have an outstanding appointment
for an eye test, I had better go quickly.

Kind regards,
Huw

Colin & Ralph,

I have looked at the two series files that I have found exhibit the problem
so far in more detail with respect to the order of classes listed in the
drop down list box when adding a new competitor. The impression I get is
that Sailwave is:-
a.. using the classes and ratings already used in the series file
b.. using the rating files in the ratings folder
and make a display list.

My Eureka moment.
I have just realised what the problem is! It is case matching, obvious when
you spot it :frowning:
The drop down list box of classes is doing a case sensitive sort. It is
listing classes starting with a numeric first followed by classes starting
with an Uppercase alphabetic character followed by classes starting with a
lower case alphabetic character.

What I had done was to change the classes to mixed case in the series files
whilst the ratings files are all Upper case, which Colin has forced to
lowercase when presenting in the drop down list box.

Colin,
Could this be a potential problem when it comes to wanting to update ratings
values, as describe in your recent response to and a valuable facility?

I hope my findings do not cause you any or at least minor coding changes.

Kind regards,
Huw

  - all the numeric classes (29er, 505 etc), followed by
  - the alpha classes in my series (Albacore to Solo)
  - all the alpha classes included in my .csv ratings files

The other change is that the .csv files are all in upper case but the New
Competitor drop down list
  is in lower case

When I create a new file in 1.76, the list is as per the .csv files but in
lower case

Is your list coming out the same?
If so, I suspect that this is over to Colin

I have changed the title to make it stand out more for Colin

  Regards
  Ralph

  Ralph,

Sorry but I did not say that they don't all not show. What is happening is
that some classes are not listed when I want to select them from the drop
down list but they are in the ratings file when I open it in Excel!

I am not as cautious as you in installing newer versions! I just install
over the top. Instead I save versions of the data files for certain
versions
  of Sailwave.

    Hi Huw
There is a button in the Global Options to open the ratings folder but
the
  rest seems to have gone!
    Colin will need to reply

Re adding new competitor, mine (1.76) seems to be working OK, in spite
of
  above.
Classes are in alpha order in the drop down list.

Not quite sure what your list problem is, as you say that the list is no
  longer in an alphabetically
sorted order (but still visible in another order??) but then go on to
say
  that they don't show at
    all?

Sorry if I am stating the obvious but have you installed the version to
  the correct directory?
I have set up a development directory to test the latest releases.
When installing, if I double click on the development directory the new
  version is then installed
into a Sailwave sub directory within the development directory.
Sometimes I forget to delete the Sailwave sub directory & then seem to
lose some of my basic data

    Hi all fellow Sailwave users,

Is my installation or has the latest versions of Sailwave lost the
Ratings
file button and also the capability to update all competitors following
changes to the ratings file? Or have I missed some comment somewhere
that
    this was being removed?

I am also seeing strange behaviour when adding a new competitor and
selecting a class from the drop down list, it now longer is in an
alphabetically sorted order. Additionally classes do not seem to show
in
the list but when I go to the ratings file and open it with Excel the
  class
    I wanted is there!

This appears to be when adding competitors to an existing series.

    Kind regards,
    Huw

Hi Colin
Understand what you are saying & presume that the only way of displaying a list of ratings now is by
opening the csv file.
The original window was a very useful, instant display of classes & PYs, will miss it :frowning:

When you say "tick the 'update competitor ratings' box for each..." do you mean the box 'set
competitor ratings from ratings files before scoring' ???
If so, the current text is rather confusing (KISS)

Also, previous versions had a button for updating the list after changes.
This was relevant if the regatta had a class not listed in the files eg foiling moths
Does updating the csv file automatically do this now?

I like the option of different rating systems but how would you deal with different Portsmouth
Yardstick ratings?
For club racing, we have locally adjusted PYs but for open meetings, we stick to the standard RYA
ratings.
At the moment, we have two versions of SW on the computer (Club & Open meetings) pointing to two
different ratings directories

Regards
Ralph

Hi Huw,

I have continued looking at the my problem and seem to have
narrowed it down
to being exhibited in two series files of mine and not new series. New
series exhibit the listing sort order you have described and I would have
intuitively expected. I will continue researching.

What is the probolem being exhibited; I'm a bit confused now!

Regards,
Colin J

NB: Lowercase needs fixing. Facility to update ratings (regardless of
whether or not scoring system is doing it) needs adding back.

displaying a list of ratings now is by
opening the csv file.
The original window was a very useful, instant display of classes
& PYs, will miss it :frowning:

I removed it because it was regularly being misinterpreted as the value that
Sailwave will use, rather than a source a values that the user can assign.
I can put it back but I need to somehow clarify the difference. Everything
I do in these releases to the SUG is experimental; it can all be changed
around again; consider it an evolutionary type algorithm ; I try something,
it either fits or doesn't fit the environment (users) and it survives or is
killed off...

When you say "tick the 'update competitor ratings' box for

If you have the box ticked in the scoring systemn, the values are updated
when you score.

Presently the only was is to use club classes like ClubDart, but in the
future you'll be able to add a another rating system based on the same
formulta. In fact you could do that now using the Custom rating system.

Opened up this year's Tiger Trophy files (processed in 1.58) &

Apart form the lowercase anomoly, can you tell me what order you were

Hi Colin
Understand the experimental comments (taken as read)
The purpose of my email is to
- let people know what changes I have come up with
- see if anyone else agrees with my suggestions, if not forget my email.

Looked at custom rating system which is fine if you understand what c, e and r mean :o(
Also it would mean inputting lots of standard RYA PYs so will stick to our current method until
adding another customised version can be applied

Regards
Ralph

Hi Colin
My original email did not make it totally clear that all three items were appearing in my list.
i.e. alpha classes in my ratings file AND alpha classes in my 1.58 file (duplicating alpha classes)

I don't think it is a major issue as it only applies to a series which is 'upgraded' to the latest
release.
I will leave others to identify if it is a significant problem or not.

Is it something to do with 1.76 now requiring scoring systems to be set up?
If so, it should disappear as new series are set up

Ralph

This should be fixed in 1.77 available on the website.
