[sailwave] Re: Getting graphics (burgees) to show up on the web

Nick,

A couple of questions

What are you emailing to your friend the webmaster, an HTML file or
the Sailwave .BLW file?

Is the webmaster then uploading the file you send to organisers web
site? I guess so.

If you are emailing the HTML then your webmaster will need the burgee
graphic on his computer to be able to see it instead of the red cross.
But it is not just that simple As I said in my previous reply; Sailwave references by default the club
burgee and venue graphic files by a full Windows file PATH (for example
C:\Documents and Settings\huw\My Documents\My Pictures\myburgee.gif) ,
therefore when you display a web page locally, as you do when you
publish the results to your default web browser, the web browser can
use the full Windows file PATH so that the graphic image gets
displayed. If you send an HTML file to some one else unless they have
the graphic file on their PC in the exact same location, .
full Windows file PATH, they will not see the graphic but just the red
cross, which means that the web browser cannot find the file location.
The webmaster will also have to upload the burgee graphic file to the
web site for it to be seen. But again it is not just that simple For viewing a web page (HTML file) on either a different PC or from a
web site, it is best to have to start with the Sailwave .BLW file and
the graphic files you want displayed in the same folder on your PC.
You set up Sailwave so that it uses a relative reference to the
graphics file not a full Windows PATH. You then send a copy of the web
page (HTML) file and the graphic image to someone else and tell them to
save the attachments to the same folder, they then should see the
graphic images when they open the web page in their default web
browser. Also in the case of your friend the webmaster if he uploads
the web page (HTML file) and the graphics images to the same folder on
the web server again the images should be displayed as part of the web
page.
How do you get a relative file path instead of a full Windows file PATH?
When you select the images you want for either or both the event &
venue burgee fields in the Series properties window in Sailwave, delete
everything to the left of the last \ and the last .
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw,

Thanks for the reply. So, my situation is that I’m the scorer of the
event and have Sailwave on my computer. My friend is the webmaster of
the organising groups website. As I don’t have all the info. yet to get
Sailwave to upload the results directly, I have to go the e-mail route
with the results. I take it from your reply that the other person would
need to have Sailwave and the graphics on their computer for them to be
able to see the images? Right?

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Huw,

I'm using the publish to e-mail option in Sailwave... so whatever format Sailwave uses for that is what they are getting (I'm assuming that it's in an html format). Anyway... right now I'm SO fed-up with Sailwave that I'm taking a break from it and will try again later. There needs to be a way to embed the graphics into the Sailwave file (something like embedding fonts in an MS Word document) so there isn't this issue of not having the graphics onone computer etc.

Cheers,

Nick

embdding images into into HTML is possible but it
vastly increases the size of the files and it doent work with internet
explorer - IE8 was supposed to work but I just downloaded it and it
doesn’t. There are workarounds for IE but they involve lots of
javascript and it’s a bit of a pain.

I always point to images online rather than on my computer - then they
always show up in the results if the viewer is online.

For example the Nationality flag collection is online and when Sailwave
generates the HTML it points at them.

Attached is an example of a an ambedded image - use right-click and
‘view source’ to see what I mean about data size… NB: will not work
in IE.
