[sailwave] Re: Importing results in V 1.41

Colin;
One of our club members has a side business of timing sporting events. He
started with Alpine Skiing and has branched into timing of mountain bike,
road bike, running and now sailing events. He has developed a lot of ideas
to ensure the accuracy of timing. At one regatta last year he used a
program that recorded the time of day each time a button was pushed. It was
very easy for the race committee to push a button for each boat crossing the
line even when some sail numbers were missed. We also had other members of
the Race Committee recording time of day and sail numbers on our traditional
paper race forms. There were 95 boats at the regatta so it was inevitable
that some sail numbers were missed in close finishes. The sequential list
of finishing times was compared with the hand written times to find where
sail numbers were missed.

It would be really slick if we could import the list of finishing times into
Sailwave and have them sequentially pop into the time of finish window in
the scoring by sail number routine. Most scoring errors are due to finish
time typos. Being able to import a list of finish times would greatly speed
up the scoring process and at the same time eliminate many errors. Is this
modification practical?

Hi Colin,

I am working on improving the import facilities as we speak; they are
too restrictive an unintuitive as they stand. I have promised them
to somebody by the end of next week at the latest. When done you'll
be able to import as required. To forewarn you; you'll need commas
between the fields.

Hi Tom,

The import system is currently undergoing a revamp (current major
task); you will be able to import finish times when it's done, but
they'll go straight into the results at present. I see what you mean
though and could fiddle along these lines later. ETA for revamped
import is end week 1 April. CJ.

Tom,

We have club member who has written a very similar utility in that every
press of a button records a time. Later against this time can be entered
the event associated with it, e.g. up AP, up Individual Recall, Class & Sail
# finish.

So having a mechanism, e.g. CSV file format, that could import finish
information into SailWave would be most useful. Our time recording software
does not output a start time as well so we would welcome a mechanism in
SailWave to allow the definition of start times for all boats competing or
if split into Fleets the start times for the Fleets.

Others thoughts welcomed.
Regards,
Huw
