[Sailwave] Re: Ratings files

Guys,

We have spent many a frustrating hour with these ratings files, and the problems of Sailwave not loading them correctly. Almost all the problems have been Excel derived, whereby it seems to put in hidden characters ( probably something to do with Microsoft Excel format ) when you save the altered file, which unfortunately neither Notepad nor Excel will display. This is a real problem for the average user as when he cannot display a character, they will assume that there is none, as we did.

Jon is there any chance you could put in a line of code in Sailwave to ignore these characters if Sailwave comes across them, as I’m sure this will be a continuing saga for the average user as most will open any csv file with Excel.

With regards

Wayne

Hi Malcom - you are correct as always, although the files that Huw had supplied and I guess Wayne had derived his from a similar source had many invisible Hex A0 characters in it, which then causes Excel not to recognise it as a number and left justifies it, if viewed in Excel whereas a field that didn’t have the A0 looks like a number to Excel and it right justifies it. So this explains why Mark could see some fields as left and others as right justified. I agree with you totally that it is not what you expect in a csv file. I have stripped all the Hex A0 characters out of the current files so hopefully these will be OK. For any one who has a similar issue - I used the free and excellent Notepad++ with the Hex viewer plugin to both see and remove the A0 characters.

Hi Wayne,

Been looking into this in more detail the A0 is used as the code for a non blanking space (&nbsp) typically used with html so it really seems to depend on the original source of the data. I could not make Excel put it into a .csv file no matter what method I tried without having it in the source.

If anyone can point me at the original source of data I will investigate but it does not seem to be Excel which is creating these characters. I created files by screen scraping from the web and as long as I only paste the text into Excel - everything is fine.

To clarify (and amplify?) Jon's comment:

If you copy and PASTE some text into Excel you CAN create non-breaking
spaces if it was in the original you copied from. If you copy and PASTE
SPECIAL>AS TEXT then any non-breaking spaces are converted to normal
spaces. It depends on how you paste, not what you paste.

As Jon says, the problem characters were undoubtedly in the original
source from which the CSV was generated (99% certainty).
