I couldn’t get a command line to function - tried several
variations. Generally got `file not found’, though I can run the
install from Nautilus.

Not got a working box to test on right now, fried hard
disk I think.
However always worth running from a command line as the
error messages will be more diagnostic. Assuming you
download into a folder called Downloads id try:
myusername$ wine "~/Downloads/sw2.5.exe"
Then if need be the same with sudo just in case its a
privs issue…
I suspect there are settings to increase verbosity of
errors but wine at command line is usually verbs enough!!

Calum,
Entering just `wine' produces a context message saying a program has
to be specified.
Entering wine notepad.exe works.

OK so to be sure we are getting this right open a terminal and run: ($ is the linux command prompt you don’t need to type this!)
$ cd ~
$ wget “http://sailwave.com/download/sailwave/sw2_5.exe”
$ wine sw2_5.exe
All this is doing is downloading a fresh copy of s/wave to a known location and then executing it. Post the error message you get…

I got Ken going this morning - via remote control from halfway around the world!
Just for reference in the future, his problem was a corrupted .wine directory. I uninstalled wine, deleted his .wine directory, and reinstalled wine. It worked fine, and he is up and going.
No error, but I wasn't the one with the problem, it was Ken.
But I see from a later email that Andy managed to sort his problem out - case closed!

Never cease to be amazed by Sailwave User Group. Sorry to be the last to post but thanks Malcolm, Calum for your efforts that I mostly missed but especially Andy from half way around the world sorting a laptop in Chorley Lancs ( I sail at Wigan I live in Chorley) I don't know what Colin set out to do but he has created more than a software package and I am doing my best to persuade our committe to make a donation to the cause
Cheers
