  Importance: High

I'm getting ready for scoring 3 open meetings this week-end using
Sailwave.
Please can some one advise me on the rationale for Sailwave
resolving the 5
points tie below in the way that it has. Under Appendix A8.1 I
would have
expected Competitor 3 to get the higher position given that in the
one race
that both counted (Race 2), Competitor 3 beat Competitor 7. This is
how the
tie at 8 points appears to have been resolved, using Race 1.
  Many thanks,

Hi Kit,

Nice to hear from you again, hope all is well.

  (6) 4 1
  2 3 (5)

8.1: Discards not included. One boat has 1,4 and the other has 2,3 so 1,4
wins with more firsts. The tie is resolved by 8.1.

The 8pt tie later in the results is resolved by 8.2.

Are you using v8.2 build 4? - anything prior to that *may* have a buglet
that made tie resolution dodgy - but I'd personally say the above is
correct. Just to reassure you, Sailwave tie resolution has been recently
tested by the USSA and was found to be OK.

Would it be useful if Sailwave explained *how* it broke ties itself; perhaps
using the notes field... (anybody)?

Regards,
Colin

Kit,
Appendix A8.1 says list the boat's score from best to worst and at the first
point where there is a difference the tie shall be broken, (but don't
include discards)
Therefore:
Competitor 7 scores 1,4
Competitor 3 scores 2,2
Competitor 7 wins because he has the best score( 1 beats 2)

The interesting result is for 5th & 6th position where using A8.1
listing best to worst
Competitor 5 discards race 3 therefore scores 3,5 whilst competitor 4
discards race 2 therefore scores 3,5 as well, therefore surely rule A8. 2
applies where they both scored equally therefore surely rule A8.3 applies
where competitor 4 wins because in the last race he came 3rd while
competitor 5 dnf

Hi Charlie,

My take on the other tie in the series (good series huh) is this:-

  BoatA: 3 5 (DNF)
  BoatB: 5 (6) 3

8.1: Tie as you say with both boats having a (sorted) result of 3,5.

8.2: Can't use race 2 or 3 because at least one of the boats tied on 8.1 has
a discard in these races. Thefore BoatA beats BoatB with 1 win over BoatB's
0 wins; thus the tie is resolved by 8.2.

I'm am a fan of 8.2, I think it's so much better than the old system;
especially when you consider something like:-

  B: 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,1

I quite like the idea of dumping 8.1 totally in fact!! - in a way ordered
results (8.2) are more important then sorted (8.1) results... but I doubt I
could persuade the ISAF of that... :-))

Regards,
Colin

Colin,
Thanks very much for clarifying the rule.
I see that no "race" which a tied boat has excluded from shall be
considered in calculating the result
Thanks

Hi colin,
I was wondering if there was any need to include a system of using both a
boat handicap and a skippers handicap in calculating the results of a race.
This would be useful in the event of a mixed fleet race including many
different skipper abilities as well.
regards
Charlie

Hi Charlie,

I think that's probably come under the heading os personal handicaps. I
haven't decided what to do about PHs but it's on the todo list somewhere...

Regards,
Colin
