[sailwave] Rotational Sail Numbers?

Hi Ed.

Given your context I would love to be able to accommodate you but I can't
see how to in the existing versions. THere is a seeding tool that allocates
strings to a field based on a list in a random order which you could use to
see the initial sailnumbers but thyat's about it. It seems like what's
required more and more is a complete competitor records for each race with
various ways of populating it... blank values assume the default record.
Lots of support requests would be handled by this. I'll think about it some
more.

Colin J

We have a need in some of our Hobie Class World Championships to score the
event where the competitors change boats and sail numbers between
each race.
The boats are factory-supplied and this process appears to level
the playing
field.

Can this be handled by Sailwave? Furthermore, can Sailwave generate the
sail number assignments, by race, for the competitors on some
kind of random
or mixed-up basis. We have a custom scoring program that does
all this, but
I'd love to migrate to Sailwave.

Thanks,
Ed Muns

Colin, Ed, at Burghfield we had a problem with our laser fleet forever
changing their sails, changing boats, swapping them with each other etc etc,
which made using sailwave a nightmare. We created a sign-on form that
allowed entrants to enter using their 'boat no' as opposed to the 'sail no'.
Not had any problems since. For the Hobie thing why not use competitor
number?

Thank you for the idea, Simon. Using a competitor number in place of the
sail number would keep the competitors straight, but would require some
major race management capability outside of Sailwave. The Order-of-Finish
forms can only be done with sail numbers, so then some translation (unique
for each race) would have to be performed before entering the data into
Sailwave. Furthermore, some additional tool would be needed to generate the
sail number assignments for each competitor for each race.

The only manageable solution is to have all this integrated into the scoring
program. We have done that with some custom software that we use at our
championships where this factory-supplied boat/randomly-assigned sail
numbers format is used. It would be wonderful to move to a "standard"
program like Sailwave. I use Sailwave for all my other regatta
configurations and love it.

Thanks for the explanation. I certainly couldn't figure out how to do this,
but wanted to be sure I wasn't overlooking a technique ... or ignorant of
some feature(s). The next time I will need to score such an event format is
late July. If I were to use new software though, I would want to have it
operational long before then to be able to test it thoroughly. This seems
like a big enough change that wouldn't fit that timeframe, but I anxiously
await the possibility if and when you find a way to incorporate it.

Best,
Ed
