In my original message I did not mention that we also have a similar problem
with the improved Blaze rig which is still listed by the RYA at 1047 - which
I think is also too high but have no real data to support that view.
You are right Ralph that it is generally not in the builder's interest to
suggest the PY of a boat should be reduced when they improve the rig.
I followed up your suggestion and contacted Marconi SC and had a response
that they sailed the Byte CII off 1113 last year and although this may be a
little too low it is not too far adrift. Somewhat different from 1162, eh!

Geoff

It's not a Topper thing, just commercial common sense in making sure that
your product does not die
when competitors do something better.
The sad thing is that when a configuration/spec is improved, the
Class/Builder does not normally
lobby clubs to recommend to the RYA (in the annual return) that the PY
should be reduced.
It happens when a class or age of boat is left behind after developments eg
Classic Fireballs &
Flying Fifteens but it never seems to happen when the class becomes faster
… I wonder why???
Those sceptics out there may suggest that if a boat becomes more competitive
(ie an unfair PY) more
people will buy the boat - as if the marketeers would do such a thing
The phrase "they ...made fantastic improvements to it and kept the original
py" suggests that the
RYA may be a party to this 'unfairness' but if enough clubs don't send in
returns, the RYA cannot
respond & the boat continues to win lots of club General Handicap events.

Ralph

it must be a topper thing, they did the same with the blaze a few years ago,
made fantastic improvements to it and kept the original py

Subject: [sailwave] RYA PYs - Byte CII
Does anyone have any information or views on the PY for the Byte CII ?
According to the new RYA list the only PY for the Byte is unchanged at 1162
which is highly surprising unless this figure is not applicable to the new
rig – although the note “2004 version” implies that it is
applicable?
The CII rig is undoubtedly much faster than the previous configuration and
from experience within our club (Chipstead) the new figure should be no
higher than 1130 – possibly even lower.

Geoff
