[sailwave] Sailwave license agreement

Good points all Nick. For what it’s worth the same thoughts went through my head when this issue came up. I’ll take these comments back to the committee.

I’m just the messenger of course, I wasn’t involved in the design of the policy so I don’t fully understand the subtleties. I know that the club is particularly sensitive to such issues right now as we anticipate our worldwide visibility growing significantly in the next few months and want to be sure all our t’s are crossed and i’s dotted.

In any case, Colin points out that his goals can be met within the guidelines of our policy, thanks Colin!

The difference between internet content and documentcontent has long been forgotten by the most important component - theaudience. If your committee has agreed to provide reference in writtenform, it is no different than the link to Sailwave.Consider other not-for-profit organizations that provides references. Forexample, volunteer fire companies that develop ad-books comprised of localmerchants who buy space in the book. This is a source of funding for neededequipment. Churches do the same…advertisements at activities and events. Many yacht clubs have linked with SailNet but are stillnot-for-profit…they receive some discount for their members use ofSailNet. Take a look at the American Red Cross site www.redcross.org forexamples of linking to “supporters”. Couldn’t Sailwave be considered asupporter…?Most not-for-profit organizations readily provide advertisement for theircontributors. Would it help considering Sailwave a contributor to theotherwise expense of buying and endorsing a different product. Couldcommercialism, as your committee might view it, exclude an “endorsement” ofyour club’s enthusiastic use of the product…?There are many other examples that might be useful to consider. I believewe could all come up with some ideas of how to help your club accept thelink.Regards,Nick Puccio-----Original Message-----From: daviddcferguson [mailto:dave@fergusonsnw.com]Sent: Wednesday, March 20, 2002 8:11 PMTo: sailwave@yahoogroups.comSubject: [sailwave] Sailwave license agreementMy post earlier today appears to have lost its content. I’ll re-compose it as best I can.I hate to be the squeaky wheel but requiring that a live link beincluded with the race results may preclude my club from usingSailWave because it conflicts with our Commercialism Policy.Colin, I ran your earlier request - to keep the URL in the resultsand post something on our website about SailWave - by ourCommercialism committee. They agreed wholeheartedly that we shouldacknowledge using SailWave to manage race results, but they felt wecould not post a live link to the SailWave site.As a non-profit (or is that not-for-profit, I never know)organization we cannot appear to be affiliated with any commercialenterprises without jeopardizing that status. While SailWave is nota commercial enterprise today, it may become so in the future, asyou yourself have mentioned. As everyone else has already stated we love the product, are verygrateful to your for your efforts and want to give you therecognition you deserve. If you could require a written referenceto SailWave instead of a live link we would be happy to comply (andindeed already planned to).Dave Fergusonhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/sailwavehttp://www.sailwave.com/To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to:sailwave-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.comYour use of Yahoo!
