[sailwave] Sole starter

Our rules state that "One entry or starter does not constitute a race"
therefore the race is excluded from the series. I don't like it; I want to
encourage people to turn out, hence my initial question. By implication our
"one starter" rule would apply to Zero starters.

Hi John,

Taking this one step further we sometimes (unfortunately) have the situation
where a race is put on for fleets A and B but only boats from Fleet A turn
up. The question is: should that race count as a 'sailed' race for Fleet B
for the purpose of calculating the number of discards - i.e. score
everybody DNC - or - should that race for Fleet B be treated like an
abandoned race - i.e. an unsailed race. My inclination is the former - if
the club takes the trouble to put on a race and nobody starts then tough -
they get DNC... what would/do you do? Sailwave is a bit fuzzy about this
at the moment and I want to clarify it. There don't seem to be any specific
rules about it, so by induction...

When i looked at this earlier this year i couldnt find any rules that
explicitly covered
this and therefore came to the conclusion that in the absence of any Club
specific rule
they should score a first place if they finish or a dnf if they dont.

We used to have a rule/understanding that said there had to be at least 3
boats in a race but
this has disappeared and i'm not sure why someone who turns up for a race
shouldnt get the
points for taking part just because no-one else turns up. This has become a
little bit more
of a problem for us since we introduced slow/fast fleets since occasionally
one of the fleets
may only have 1 boat yet the other fleet has enough for a sensible race. Its
not common but
occasionaly if the weather is lowsy and the start time not very friendly it
happens.

Not specifically a Sailwave question, but how do others score a
sole starter
/ finisher in a race please?

Hi Kit,

We reviewed our club SIs a couple of years ago. There were numerous rules
that seemed to exist for purely historical reasons - they'd always been
there but nobody really knew why! We decided to just use Appendix A with
it's 'long series' option for DNF etc and 'shared' points option for race
ties. AFAIK the only additions we have now is a specification for OOD
points and a specification for discards.

Regards,
Colin
