[sailwave] Summary of Emails by Subject

HI!
Looked at the pdf, and it looked great! Could it be so that SW checked for a "newer" on startup??

Also it could be greate to have a "How to...." and a "Best practice". There's a lot of writing to complete this... Could some of SW "partners" do parts of it ?

I would like to have Colin doing "code developement"...

regards!

Hi
Having recently joined the Yachts & Yachting Forum I wonder if this may be the solution to our
problems i.e.

The forum is split into predetermined groups (your pdf structure Colin?)
Consistency of subject titles as in many instances, it will be replying to an existing thread (or
forum subject which has yet to receive any postings/queries
If you start a thread on a new subject, you can be notified through email of replies (the email

You can request emails on any new replies even if you were not the originator. This would allow
users to be selective on what subjects they wish to be notified of (eg don't select the Development
section) To save having to do this on each posting, we may need to persuade the authors to set up
receiving emails for categories/sections (if the facility is not already there).
Nil maintenance required, each subject has its own thread. Just needs a one time effort to set up
the structure of the forum (break up FAQ's on web site to start each thread??). There may need to be
some maintenance for the fact that a problem is now included in the latest version but this is
probably in Colin's new release email anyway.
Likely reduction in emails as new users will be able to look at the thread before asking a question
which has been answered many times before.
As Martin quite rightly says, this would allow Colin to concentrate on development (whilst still
keeping an eye on things) and over a period of time, we all contribute towards generating a 'user
manual' which is easy to access & identify not only the theory of how to do, but also benefit from
other users' experience
And finally (if I have read the details correctly) - IT'S FREE!!

The above are all positives - have I missed anything which makes this a non-starter??

Regards
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

We've tried forums for Sailwave before and scrapped them - it's too hard
(for me) to keep track of what needs doing. I would prefer to keep the SUG
as it is - email lands in inbox and it stays until its sorted out.

However, I don't mind hosting a "race management" (pick your own title) set
of forums that just happens to have a section about using sailwave and other
scoring software if you see what I mean. I would not use the same software
that Mark used - it's not that good - for example it doesn't track how far
you;ve read in a thread. I would use phpBB - see example here -
www.sailwave.com/bacca (not on-line yet) - i can give admin rights and then
you can create all the categories and forums that you like. it would be an
independent forum run by you.... what do you think. if you decided to have
a dedicated sailwave forum that would be up to you.

Colin,

I would be willing to be an administrator of a Race Management Forum under
which Sailwave was a topic. I agree that you need to have requests landing
in your inbox.

I personally liked the phpBB Sailwave Forum that you had running for a
while, I thought it a useful medium alongside the email.

Kind regards,

  Hi Ralph,

We've tried forums for Sailwave before and scrapped them - it's too hard
(for me) to keep track of what needs doing. I would prefer to keep the SUG
as it is - email lands in inbox and it stays until its sorted out.

However, I don't mind hosting a "race management" (pick your own title)
set
of forums that just happens to have a section about using sailwave and
other
scoring software if you see what I mean. I would not use the same
software
that Mark used - it's not that good - for example it doesn't track how far
you;ve read in a thread. I would use phpBB - see example here -
www.sailwave.com/bacca (not on-line yet) - i can give admin rights and
then
you can create all the categories and forums that you like. it would be
an
independent forum run by you.... what do you think. if you decided to
have
a dedicated sailwave forum that would be up to you.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I have used BB * egroups (Now YahooGroups) for many years)

My preference would be to stick with Yahoogroup for the following reasons

1. When you receive each and every email, you are reminded about the topic
and any changes problems that do occur, as they occur. If I did not read a
BB for some time, I would have to go and read the entire BB to catch and
decide which messages and want to follow.

2. I can set a rule in Outlook to file all messages from Sailwave in it's
own folder, That way all messages from Sailwave are not in my inbox, and I
can catch up with reading them when I have the time.

3. If people are concerned about the amount of emails, it is always possible
to set up a separate Yahoogroup, Call it [sailwave-requests]
[sailwave-howto] then people wanting to read that can subscribe to those
groups.

4. Yahoogroups does offer the facility to those who do not want all the
emails, to simply either get a daily digest or no emails at all, that way
they just read all emails online and is therefore no different to having a
phpBB

Just my 5p's worth

Regards
Terry

Hi Colin et al

One of the key elements of my suggestion was that it would need to have the facility for members to
be able to 'register' to receive every email posted on this thread/main subject area/all emails on
the BB.
I agree with everyone that whilst some of the emails are irrelevant to me, I still like to see what
is going on in the world.

Having recently started a thread on the Y&Y BB, I was able to receive emails for every posting, as
well as being able to look on the BB to browse the whole picture. It is this process which made me
think how useful it would be as a reference point for how to do things in SW

I am not a BB guru so perhaps do not fully understand what happens in the background.
I had assumed that the BB was self-administering in that once it has been set up, the originator
creates the thread & others respond to it.
Am I missing some work in the background as like others, I would prefer to see you devoting your
valuable time to Sailwave programing

Regards
Ralph

Hi
Having recently joined the Yachts & Yachting Forum I wonder if
this may be the solution to our
problems i.e.

The forum is split into predetermined groups (your pdf structure Colin?)
Consistency of subject titles as in many instances, it will be
replying to an existing thread (or
forum subject which has yet to receive any postings/queries
If you start a thread on a new subject, you can be notified
through email of replies (the email
includes the actual reply, the same as we have now on SUG)
You can request emails on any new replies even if you were not
the originator. This would allow
users to be selective on what subjects they wish to be notified
of (eg don't select the Development
section) To save having to do this on each posting, we may need
to persuade the authors to set up
receiving emails for categories/sections (if the facility is not
already there).
Nil maintenance required, each subject has its own thread. Just
needs a one time effort to set up
the structure of the forum (break up FAQ's on web site to start
each thread??). There may need to be
some maintenance for the fact that a problem is now included in
the latest version but this is
probably in Colin's new release email anyway.
Likely reduction in emails as new users will be able to look at
the thread before asking a question
which has been answered many times before.
As Martin quite rightly says, this would allow Colin to
concentrate on development (whilst still
keeping an eye on things) and over a period of time, we all
contribute towards generating a 'user
manual' which is easy to access & identify not only the theory of
how to do, but also benefit from
other users' experience
And finally (if I have read the details correctly) - IT'S FREE!!

The above are all positives - have I missed anything which makes
this a non-starter??

Regards
Ralph

HI!
Looked at the pdf, and it looked great! Could it be so that SW
checked for a "newer" on startup??

Also it could be greate to have a "How to...." and a "Best
practice". There's a lot of writing to
complete this... Could some of SW "partners" do parts of it ?

I would like to have Colin doing "code developement"...

regards!

Hi Huw,

If I set one up empty, you could populate it WRT categories/forums etc.
Also, I would suggest registering a URL and point it at the forums. I would
not be able to formally commit to monitoring it, although in practice I
probbaly would.

Hi Ralph,

I also support Sailwave via direct emails and I get a *lot* more of them
than SUG emails - most new users do not want to post their questions in a
public arena. Currently it's the same action for me to process them; i.e.
reply to an email - and I can do it off line. It also allows me to sync
Outlook to my Pocket PC and read/reply to stuff while doing other things
like 'watching' the TV.

Forums do notify you of emails but you can't reply to them as an email (off
line) - you have to go to the forum and do it live - online - it's a
restriction that I personally don't want to commit to. However the SUG is
not mine so I'll live with whatever happens to it! - the situation is as per
the web site - I support Sailwave via email and also monitor the SUG
messages and answer any that are not answered for a while.

Colin

Hi Colin et al

One of the key elements of my suggestion was that it would need
to have the facility for members to
be able to 'register' to receive every email posted on this
thread/main subject area/all emails on
the BB.
I agree with everyone that whilst some of the emails are
irrelevant to me, I still like to see what
is going on in the world.

Having recently started a thread on the Y&Y BB, I was able to
receive emails for every posting, as
well as being able to look on the BB to browse the whole picture.
It is this process which made me
think how useful it would be as a reference point for how to do
things in SW

I am not a BB guru so perhaps do not fully understand what
happens in the background.
I had assumed that the BB was self-administering in that once it
has been set up, the originator
creates the thread & others respond to it.
Am I missing some work in the background as like others, I would
prefer to see you devoting your
valuable time to Sailwave programing

Hi Ralph,

We've tried forums for Sailwave before and scrapped them - it's too hard
(for me) to keep track of what needs doing. I would prefer to keep the SUG
as it is - email lands in inbox and it stays until its sorted out.

However, I don't mind hosting a "race management" (pick your own
title) set
of forums that just happens to have a section about using
sailwave and other
scoring software if you see what I mean. I would not use the
same software
that Mark used - it's not that good - for example it doesn't track how far
you;ve read in a thread. I would use phpBB - see example here -
www.sailwave.com/bacca (not on-line yet) - i can give admin
rights and then
you can create all the categories and forums that you like. it
would be an
independent forum run by you.... what do you think. if you
decided to have
a dedicated sailwave forum that would be up to you.
