[sailwave] v 1.59

Hi!

The "old way" was not very good, anyway. Because I had to adjust the coloumn width to see everything....

Maybe another way to do it is a dialogue box where I can define which flight in which start. Maybe doing this already in the setup?

When working with flights, you have to pulish whos racing against who early.... When dealing with kids (Optimists) we're publishing flights a week before the event, and the races are defined in the SI.

regards
Martin

Hi Martin,

Ther has been a change, so that the selected competitors don't
show anymore. When working with flights, it is necessary to see
which flight are racing in which start.....

I was assuming the start name would reflect the flight/competitors... the
list has too much extra into in it; I think I'll put the selected
competitors back and dump some of the other less used stuff, but have it
available as an expandable tree.

Regards,
Colin J

Hi Martin,

My expectation was that you would call a start something like "blue+green
and red+yellow" and use select competitors to create the required
expression. Starts are new, it'll take a while for us to iterate to a
workable solution that most users are happy with. I do think that a tree
view would be better though.. As the stands the list of starts is very
cluttered. I'm also going to create a window that shows all starts for all
races, so you can set them up without going into the races themselves. I
think that will be useful; especially if I incorporate edit-in-place - i.e.
the ability to edit items by typoing into the cells (like a spreadsheet :-))

Hi Colin/Martin

In 1.58, I found this worked fine but do your development notes cover that there is more than one
method for flights?

The one which Martin & I have been using recently, is allocating competitors to flights before the
event & they keep in those flights for the whole of the event, just change which flight they sail
with on a round robin basis (bit like team racing)
This method is particularly suitable for very big fleets of a single class where it is
immpractical/impossible to have a single mass start.

The other method is used in Qualification/Finals type series where boats are re-allocated to flights
at the end of each day, based upon their position in the regatta (see Appendix L(E) Addendum C)
In this instance, there is a draw (+ seeding?) for the first day & they are then automatically
reallocated as above.
Depending on the number of boats, the daily race schedule remains the same with Red + Blue, Green +
Yellow etc.

At the end of the Qualification series, the Finals are based on say top 25 into Gold, next 25 into
Silver etc etc.
The flight system is abandoned at this stage & Gold always race against each , Silver same etc.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it  is
designing something which allows automatic reallocation for the first part of the regatta, then
fixed groups for the remainder, but (here's the low punch) combining individual results from the
Qualification AND Finals for an overall regatta score.

The Olympic Classes regattas are now automatically doing a form of this for the bigger fleets so it
is something which will not be going away as the momentum gathers for shorter start lines

I keep mentioning Appendix LE. Can't remember its url on the ISAF site but if you need a copy, let
me know & I will email it

Regards
Ralph
