Sailwave version 1.66 is available.

Installation file:-

Notes:-
Mark Sch. This version can now auto load ratings from rating files on a
per scoring system basis at the time of scoring; meaning you can easily
score the series with various rating systems.

Critical feedback appreciated.

Colin,

Just found a problem with v1.66 :frowning:

You have implemented the capability of creating multiple scoring systems
that can be applied by right clicking on the scoring button, brilliant.

BUT if one has defined, as I have, custom points for codes like DNC, DNF in
a High Point Scoring system and then want to score by say using the standard
ISAF low point scoring system, I get very funny results! This is because
there is currently only one option available for setting up custom points
for codes. The principle needs extending.

I will send you a Zipped up copy of the series I am playing with that shows
this problem.

Kind regards,
Huw

I was hoping that we could get away without that complication; hence moving
the codes to the series options; i.e. hoping that each series had a single
set of codes that could be used with all the scoring systems within it.
Unless we can find a resolution, I'll have to move the codes back into the
scoring system window and allow each individual scoring system to redefine
codes as necessary (just those it needs to).

Thanks for the feedback.

Colin

Hmmm, what about two sets of codes in the series options - low point and
high point...? or is that a cludge....

Hi Huw,

It may not work if you're applying more than one high point system... It
was an attempt at a simplification but I may have to back out of it.

Hi Huw,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I do not know what others might think but it
would be fine for me.

I have decided to keep the repitore of codes where is it; in the series
options - because codes are used for results entry as well as when scoring
and also because the codes must exist for all scoring systems applied.

But on the RaceScoring tab of a scoring system window I'll add the ability
to override the *method* a code uses (and the +N point field). In this way
SeriesOptions defines what the codes are and their general semantics/format
and their default method - then that default method can be defined on a per
scoring system basis.

Regards,
Colin J

PS: a slightly simpler solution would be to extend the existing codes
interface to allow a method to be defined for each points system that
sailwave knows about, but that is limited as well - for example you may
define more than one scoring system using a high point formula and required
different methods for the codes....

Colin,

Sorry to have caused a problem for you. Look forward to seeing whatever you
think the best solution.

It is quite fundamental though, in that low point scoring systems will have
larger values for scoring codes and high points lower values for scoring
codes otherwise the series points al get messed up as I found

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw,

Sorry to have caused a problem for you. Look forward to seeing

No worries; that's what these early releases to the group are all about.
I'm constantly trying to simplify while at the same time extend
functionality and sometimes I crop too far...

NB: I came across HALs race results program today which does PN returns.
It's not free (2 month trial). Have not looked at it yet.

HALs race results program:

    * absolute pain to install (on Win95 or 98)
    * large file size
    * didn't get much further than trying to install it
    * horrible!!!
    * one of the many good reasons for using Sailwave!

Colin,

I have tried HAL when it first came out but found it not up to the ease of
use of Sailwave, however it does have some of the things being
suggested/considered for future versions of Sailwave. It is the same with
TopYacht from Australia.

HAL uses Microsoft Access as the underlying data store and TopYacht uses
Borland DBE. Have not looked at either in last 12 months seriously.

I would prefer to see something that can run on different OS platforms even
if it requires things like WINE or WinforLin for certain things. Also if
Open Source is used where possible it keeps the costs down

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw,

I would prefer to see something that can run on different OS
platforms even
if it requires things like WINE or WinforLin for certain things. Also if
Open Source is used where possible it keeps the costs down

Kind regards,
Huw

JavaScore will do that for you; multi platform, multi-language and open
source... (that you can contribute to).

Our Race Captain this year opted for HAL's race Result Program. We currently
have it on a trial period but I think the chances look good that he will
probably opt to go for it.

The reason for this is the Race computer that works with the program is
capable of doing the entire start sequence automatically. It also controls
three lights we have on the clubhouse that indicates the start times of the
race and blows the appropriate hooter at each signal. This allows us to put
a very in-experienced person in the Race Control Tower and not have to worry
about him getting muddled up with starts.

It therefore allows the people who understand how to start a race to come
sailing instead.

I have often mentioned that my preference is with Sailwave and can only hope
that they decide to use this one day. Perhaps a few of you can think of good
reasons I could put forward to them to use Sailwave instead.

Not sure if HALS race computer does our Performance Handicap System.

Regards
Terry

Colin,
Thanks for the speedy fix.

The fix in v1.67 to allow different values for scoring codes in different
series scoring works for the series I had a problem with in v1.67.

Kind regards,
Huw

  Colin,

Just found a problem with v1.66 :frowning:

You have implemented the capability of creating multiple scoring systems
that can be applied by right clicking on the scoring button, brilliant.

BUT if one has defined, as I have, custom points for codes like DNC, DNF
in
a High Point Scoring system and then want to score by say using the
standard
ISAF low point scoring system, I get very funny results! This is because
there is currently only one option available for setting up custom points
for codes. The principle needs extending.

I will send you a Zipped up copy of the series I am playing with that
shows
  this problem.

  Kind regards,
  Huw

Hi Huw,

Now that alternative scoring systems can be applied, it's glaringly obvious
that the published results don't include scoring system info...

Colin,

I had not thought about this recently, especially as I have a standard web
page I cut and paste my tables into that has at the top details of the two
scoring systems I am using at present. But it would be nice in the future to
think you will manage to get it included. Not high priority for me. I think
currently you have arrived at the point that most things are covered for my
needs, apart from the message about allowing entry using tally/bow numbers
when they are in a separate field.

Kind regards,
Huw
