Scoring - Average points

We allocate average points to sailors who carry out rescue or OD duties in
any series.
What are peoples' views on how we should calculate the points to be awarded?
Average of all scores in the series (including any DNC ) or average of races
sailed by the competitor in the series - it can make a big difference to the
final score.
I know this is not a Sailwave specific query but am taking advantage of the
wealth of experience in the user community - hope you don't mind !
Thanks for any input,
regards, Andy

Hi Andy,

If your club is anything like ours, boats do not really *want* to do OOD, so
we'd pick the one that gave them the best points; without DNC. NB: Sailwave
can do both. What we actually do is give then a fixed 1.5 points.

Regards,
Colin

Is there any way to turn off the auto completion of the class field

Sure Colin, sorry late night here on the west coast of the States, I
realize I was a bit vague;

I have imported all our competitors, boat types, skippers, phrf ratings
etc, from a script page creating HTML into an excel file, then saved
this as a .csv, then imported into sailwave.

When I then go into Sailwave and edit competitor, selecting a new Fleet
it does one of two things; 1) assumes a different boat class and auto
fills this on the current competitor overwriting the imported data,
(Always a boat class of a competitor already in that fleet) or 2) leaves
the class filed blank, again overwriting the imported data. This adds
up to a great deal of extra work retyping the boat type in the class
column. It also auto competes the Rating, which in a few cases is
different despite being the same class boat (ie head different sails,
kites, etc.) Thanks in advance.

Warmest regards,

-Doug

Hi Doug,

Early morning here, and raining...

Sounds like a bug, I'll look at it tonight (GMT). Apologies for the
inconvenience. In the meantime can you email the CSV file that you imported

Colin:

Here is one of the excel files (despite the change to allow fleet
specific race lengths, to get an overall course (ie long vs short
course) winner I need to use two .blw files, otherwise it doesn't make
a lot of sense to score overall, apples and oranges...)

I do not believe it is contextual, as I saw this same error in all the
earlier versions of sailwave, it has just been a pain in the....

Thanks for looking into it, follow these steps to replicate:

1) Import the excel .csv file into a .blw.
2) Define 2-3 Fleets, more than one
3) Change the first boat to Fleet 1
4) attempt to change second and third boat to same fleet, class will
auto complete (I think it isn't until you do this on the third or fourth
boat in the fleet.)

Let me know if you can replicate, if you are operating on Windows XP, we
can application share if you cannot. Although, I hope to be done and to
bed fairly soon. Colin thanks again, I cannot reiterate enough praise
for sailwave, it is great software.

Warmest regards,

-Doug

We do average of the races sailed since in my opinion they have turned
up on the day and therefore could have sailed and an average of the races
they sailed reflects their possible result more acurately.

What are peoples' views on how we should calculate the points to be

awarded?

Average of all scores in the series (including any DNC ) or average

of races

sailed by the competitor in the series - it can make a big

final score.

We use Average points excluding discards here at Carrickfergus.
There haven't been any complaints about the scoring since we did
that, which probably means it's working since I've heard people
whining about lesser things.

My view is that as the person has turned up and would have sailed then you
should exclude DNC, DNS etc, but should include RTD. However averaging over
the whole series means that the points aren't calculated correctly till the
series is over, and people going into the last race aren't exactly sure of
their overall standing. Our preference was to limit the number of races to
average over (we chose 3), and these were the previous 3 races that the
competitor competed in. Early in the season, we chose the first three races
the competitor competed in, so it changed dynamically for a bit. If the
competitor didn't compete in three races we used DNC for the missed races.

It is still open to be manipulated. Before we introduced the inclusion of
RTD, I saw competitors retire rather spoil their average for an upcoming
duty. Three race average could be a bit small for a long series but I never
saw anyone complain about that.

Best regards - John.

We award average points which exclude DNCs but include all other results -
average points are not allowed for the last race of the series. This seems
to work well except when an unfortunate competitor has more than one duty in
a series.

We do average of the races sailed since in my opinion they have turned
up on the day and therefore could have sailed and an average of the races
they sailed reflects their possible result more acurately.

Andy
my Club gives the Duty (both OOD and Rescue) 1 point, but they may not do
more than one duty per series, unless due to someone failing to show up,
there is no racing unless they do a second duty. We found it the only way to
get entrants to take their turn.
