Scoring by Start

We have a file set up with four fleets, each with their own start and
scoring system for weekly races. Once a year we have a race where all
the boats in all the fleets start together and sail the same course and
fleets A, B, and C are scored together and fleet D is scored separately.

Thinking that I could score by starts, I set up the starts for this
race with fleets A, B, and C in one start and fleet D in another start,
but I can't find a way to score by starts.

Because I needed to score the race right away, I went back and added
two divisions with all the boats in fleets A, B, and C in division 1
and those in fleet D in division 2. That worked fine by required
editing every entrant to add a field that has no use in any other race.

Is there a way to score by what start a boat is in?

Scoring by start is not hard-wired - you have to
engineer it. i.e. put ABC into one division and D into another then
score by division. I think I’ve thought about it a few times (score by
start) but ran into problems because competitors can change start from
race to race… It could be done if they dont change starts, but then
they may as well have been in division or something and the starts
defined like that, so I didn’t do anything special for it in the end.
Still seems to make sense…(?)

I
can live with the solution of using divisions. What I was trying to do
was take a file that has all our competitors in it that is normally used for
our main series races and use a copy of it for one of our “fun”
races. I thought I could just redefine the starts and then score by
start. It would have been nice but I’ll go back and add a division
to every boat in the master file (it will be an extra unused field in most
races) and that will allow me to use the same file and just score by division
instead of by fleet.

Thanks.

Hi Will

If you have a large number of competitors, explore the opportunities to export & import competitor data using csv files.

You should be able to export details from SW to a csv file, add the divisions in the spreadsheet (sort, copy & paste) then export it back to SW

Done in couple of minutes rather than an hour

there is no need to do that ( i think)

use the set competitor field tool and use the same selection criteria
to set the division field - few seconds…
