Scoring DNF vs DNC

We had a race last week where 10 boats started the race, then the wind died. 4 boats crossed the finish line and the remaining bobbed in the water until the race was finally called. The boats that did not finish were scored as DNC (14 pts in our fleet) instead of DNF. But they should all score as a 5. How do I change the score for this race in Sailwave?

Why do you think they should be scored as 5?
If this is a championship or short series then DNC and DNF are both scored No of boats in series + 1

If it is a long series then DNF is the number of boats in the race +1 which as you said there were 10 then DNF would be 11

I concur that in lieu of sailing instructions to the contrary, they should have been scored DNF, 11 points (10+1), or more if there were other entrants that didn’t start (DNC). However, there are better ways to deal with this situation…

We use a scoring code TLE – Time Limit Expired – scored as the number of finishers plus two, but not worse than last place among boats not scored otherwise (OCS, DSQ, etc.). This would yield a score of 6 points for all the bobbing boats in your case. Finishers = 1 thru 4; TLE = 6; OCS, DSQ, etc. = 11 (or more if there were more than 10 entrants).

TLE must be defined in the SIs.

I think the discussion has moved somewhat from the original posting.

The original poster asked (paraphrased) "after inputting the finish
times for the boats that finished the others were DNC but should have
been DNF." That is what Sailwave does by default - boats without finish
times or positions are DNC unless you change them to DNF because you
know they stated the race. I think that is a good thing - having DNC as
the default. The solution is just to click on the result cell for the
boat for that race and change the scoring code to DNF.

The issue of how many points to give to a boat that is DNF is another
issue, which is policy-related and not how-to-use-Sailwave-related. Jon
pointed out the defaults in the rulebook: entrants+1 for a regatta and
came-to-the-starting-area+1 for a series longer than a regatta.

The original poster wanted the DNF boats to all be scored as
finishers+1, which Sailwave can easily do if you simply modify the
points assigned for the DNF code. But, be sure that is what your SIs say
as that isn't what the rulebook provides.

Other options for DNF depending on what happens are a good topic for a
policy discussion and there are plenty of reasonable options.

NOTE - For the record, with "finishers+1" a last place boat will get the
same score whether they finish or drop out, since dropping out decreases
the number of finishers by 1. So, in general, I think it is better to
use "finishers+2" when you are going to use that kind of concept to give
boats an incentive (small, admittedly) to finish.
