Scoring Pursuit (Bermuda) starts

We have some PHRF races coming up, where we may try some pursuit starts. We have calculated the start times for a number of the boats for several courses (different lengths). I am not sure how to enter different start times for the different boats?

Hi Michael,

Just right click on the individual race result cell and you can enter the start time of the boat. I’ve attached a spreadsheet that allows you plan your pursuit race and group boats with similar ratings. The spreadsheet will handle; PHRF time on distance, PHRF time on time and US Portsmouth ratings.

It’s based on a spreadsheet that Jon Eskdale created.

I am not sure how to fill the yellow boxes.

will be using the PHRF ToD. I was not sure about the Finish time
field, Round to (secs) field. Attached is a modified xlsm file. I entered a start time of 12:00:00 (I
assume first (slowest) boat) and the distance.

Hi Michael,

The spreadsheet does a backwards calculation:

  • Cell I1 Estmate RaceTime enter how long you think the race will take. You entered 12:00:00 which is 12 hours A better value would probably be 02:00:00 or two hours.
  • Cell I2 Finish Time enter at what time you like the race to finish. You entered 13:00:00 , 1 pm
  • Cell I3 Round to (secs) enter what time you want the starts to round to. 60 would mean that boats start on the whole minute. 5 would be 5 second increments. With large fleets you don`t want many boats to start in 1 second increment which could create a bit of chaos. You just have 4 boats and a 1 second interval will be fine. Using Time on Distance and the 1 second round to value should produce a final finish order for awards.
  • Cell I4 is the distance of the race in NM.
