Scoring Settings

Re the RRS, can someone please specify precisely what scoring settings to put in sailwave for

A4.2 Regatta

DNF / RAF / OCS / DNS Entries + 1

DSQ / BFD Entries + 1

DNC Entries + 1

A9 Club Series

DNF / RAF / OCS / DNS Starters + 1

DSQ / BFD Starters + 1

DNC Entries + 1

I think A4.2 is correct.

However, A9, which I have used for years, is now suspect as it refers to "the number of boats that came to the starting area" In practical terms what does this mean … is it Entries - DNCs?

‘The number of boats sailing in the vicinity of the start line after the preparatory signal’ is the definition we use at Lancing SC. That is, any that start plus those scored DNS.

HTH

The numbers specified, "Entrants minus DNC" and "Starters plus DNS" are
theoretically the same but be aware that Sailwave defines "Starters" to
not include OCS so the terms don't mean quite the same thing as we might
use in casual conversation. We might say that a boat "started OCS" but
according to the technical definition a boat that is OCS didn't actually
start.

But, its easy to write a formula because "s" = boats officially ranking
as starters (NOT including OCS) while "r" = boats sailing in the
vicinity of the start line including OCS.

The concept of A9 has been in the book since 1997 and the wording has
been in the book without change since 2001. It isn't new.

The rule refers to "came to the starting area." One could argue that the
area around the RC signal boat isn't a "starting area" until the warning
signal has been made. So, I would buy the practical definition of HTH
except using "Warning Signal" instead of "Preparatory Signal." That
one-minute difference will be irrelevant 99.999% of the time.

If the race committee sees a boat in the proximity of the start line in the period before, during or immediately after the start that boat has come to the starting area. I would argue that the RC should always have a record of such boats, for safety reasons. To be checked against boats that left harbbour, boats that finished, boats that returned to harbour. It ca be embarrassing to lose a boat between the pontoon and the start line!

How do I implement “r” = boats sailing in the
vicinity of the start line including OCS.

in scoring terms to meet the requirements of A9

A9 Club Series

DNF / RAF / OCS / DNS Starters( r ) + 1

DSQ / BFD Starters ( r ) + 1

DNC Entries + 1

Thanks

John,

Under Setup|Scoring System look at the "Scoring Codes" tab. Under the
"Method" column is a description of the method used to calculate the
points for each Scoring Code.

For each Scoring Code you can click on the "Edit" symbol at the right
and then under the "Method" tab you can change the method of
calculation. Depending on your version of SW, the second one is "entries
plus N" while the fourth one is "starters plus N." You define what you
want for "N" in the "Value" box at the top of the edit page.

Elsewhere in SW you can use formulas to create custom scores (for
example, if you have your own custom high-point system). Those formulas
use various letters and for those formulas "r = boats sailing in the
vicinity of the starting line." The Scoring Code methods provide what
you want automatically so there is no need (and no ability) for using a
custom formula. I was trying to be complete but probably should have
said less or explained more.

My recommendation would be to change the definition of DNF only and
since most of the other codes link to DNF (the method is "score like,"
which is the top one on the edit page) you will be making a minimal
change to the default settings of Sailwave but still get all the various
codes giving the correct number of points. [DNC is one you also care
about but it is set to "entries plus one" by default so it normally
shouldn't need changing.]

I vaguely remember one of the emails a while ago saying there was a
setting somewhere that says to score using A9 but I don't ever remember
seeing such a setting. My club has been downloading the newest stable
version at the beginning of each year and we don't update until the
following year so we (and I) are using 2.9.7, which was the latest
stable version in Feb. of this year. Newer versions might be different
but I'm sure what we are discussing hasn't changed.

Under `Edit Scoring System', click on the hand symbol (bottom left of window) - this will reveal the option "ISAF Appendix A long series", which is A9.

This will reset codes like DNF to be r + 1
