Scoring System - Clarification of Discarded Races & Series Score Tie Breaking

Hi,

Can anyone clarify a series scoring point for me?

In Appendix A of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012 it states that series ties are broken by race scores listed in order of best to worse, and the first point where there is a difference the tie is broken in favour of the boat with the best score - NO EXCLUDED SCORES SHALL BE USED. Does this mean DISCARDED RACES are not counted in the above?

Then if a tie remains, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the LAST race.

Is my interpretation correct?

If so, does the Sailwave Program use a different set of rules? As this program seems to count discarded races when listing them best to worse?

What is correct, and what does Sailwave use / do?

Thank you for your help!!

Kind regards, Mike

It means what it says: no excluded scores shall be used. Nowhere in
the current rule book, including in appendices A, K or L does the term
“discarded races” appear. If your SIs still use this outdated term then
please change it so that any confusion disappears.

It is important to remember that some worst scores cannot be excluded
(see 90.3(b) - so they must appear in the tie break under A8.1

The default setting (see rule A2) is that a boat’s series score shall
be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score (unless 90.3b
applies). This is often changed so that a minimum number of races have
to be completed (that is started, finished, and not subsequently
abandoned by race committee or protest committee or by appeals board!
and scored) before the worst score can be excluded. If this instruction
applies, and the requisite number of races have not been completed, all
races would be used to break a tie.

I have always found that when Sailwave is requested to apply rule A8
the programme does so correctly.

Your interpretation is correct. The official name used in the rulebook for discarded races is "excluded races," meaning excluded when adding up the final series score. I think we all still call them "discards" in conversation however. Art
