I hope you don't mind, but I've moved this to the SUG in case somebody else
has better ideas...

The duplicate problem is something that will happen with or without scoring
software, so a real-world solution is required rather than a Sailwave
specific one. Everybody needs to be sure how to 'call out' the boats;
rescue and time keepers etc alike. The solutions I can think of are:-

1. As you suggest use MNA code + sailno (e.g. GBR1234) as the sailno
field.

2. Use as little of the MNA code as possible to keep things unique +
sailno, for example if the nations were GBR,SWE and FRA perhaps you could
get away with prefixes of G, S and F.

3. As above but for the first two letters of the MNA code or the last
letter.

4. Use the bow (tally) numbers and not the sail numbers. i.e. in Sailwave
put the bow number in the sailno field and put the sailnumber somewhere
else. Then when using the 'sailno' wizard you'd enter bow numbers which
would be unique.

I think the important thing is that everybody involved (even the
competitors) knows the rules so everybody is speaking the same 'language'.

Hi, Colin.

As I told you before, I'll be scoring the European Youth Championship for
the E-dinghy.

I ran into a little problem: All sailnumbers are varying from 1 to 4
digits.... This way, some are equal without the national code....

This event will be scored using App. LE add.C

Any suggestions on how to solve the "digit" problem?

I could put the national code into the sailno coloumn.....

Sending you attached the first setup....

regards, Martin

Duplicate sail numbers are an issue that the race committee must be aware of
and have procedures to handle. You are correct in saying that it should not
be a Sailwave solution, but the scoring program should alert the Race
Committee when duplicates exist so they can be handled. There are several
legitimate ways that duplicates occur.

1. Boats in different classes having the same sail number; Tornado 123
and Yngling 123. The RC needs to record class and sail number to ensure that
the results are unique.
2. Boats in the same class from different countries; Tornado USA 123
and GBR 123. The RC needs to record nationality and sail number to ensure
that the results are unique.
3. Two Lasers with the same last four digits. To avoid calling six
digit sail numbers the RC calls the last four digits of a Laser Sail number,
occasionally in large fleets they are not unique and you need to record all
six digits for those boats.

We check the entries for duplicates, and if they exist, make a list of sail
numbers. When those boats cross the line make sure we get nationality,
class, or the full six digit number. A duplicate sail number list from
Sailwave would help.

Thanks

Mark Townsend

Hi Mark,

A duplicate sail number list from
