SCP changes as series continues

I recently found that SCP numbers for some boats changed as the series continues. It actually lowered. Is this normal?

To clarify SCP= 20% penalty

It will depend if you have the scoring system configured for a Championship/short series or a long series as the way the SCP is calculated changes

In the Edit scoring system window select the scoring codes and then click on the hand in the bottom left. There you will find some presets - you don’t have to use these presets but they are a starting point from which you can edit them to the exact configuration specified in you NOR/SI’s.

If you select Championship/Short series then SCP is calculated as

Points for place of (finishing place + N percent of boats included in the series)

If you select Long series then SCP is calculated as

Points for place of (finishing place + N percent of boats that came to the start area in the race)

So if you have it configured for a short series but later add boats to the series it will affect the earlier results.

Just to clarify nomenclature-

The rulebook has a default scoring scheme which appears to apply to
every series of races but A9 changes the scoring for a series of races
that is "longer than a regatta" (a regatta being an event with races,
including lay days, held on essentially consecutive days). So, in the
rulebook the two categories that Jon describes could be referred to as
"regattas" and "series longer than a regatta" (in fact, the rulebook
really only has "longer than a regatta" and "other") Rule A9
automatically applies to all series longer than a regatta so if you
don't want that you have to say something in your sailing instructions.
I would venture to say that any series of races where you enter each
race separately is automatically "longer than a regatta" regardless of
whether or not the races are held on consecutive days.

Jon's "short vs long" might be slightly confusing because the
distinction between the two categories is independent of the number of
races, i.e., the "length" of the series - a "regatta" could consist of
24 races over 4 consecutive days while a "series longer than a regatta"
could consist of 2 races (1 race each day) on 2 different Saturdays.

Art

PS - For a series longer than a regatta, it is generally considered that
the Low Point System that is the default in the rulebook, in combination
with rule A9, is not particularly fair. The greater the possibility the
number of competitors can change from race to race in the series, the
greater the potential for unfairness. There are a number high-point
systems out there that can help to mitigate any unfairness.
