I’ve been asked by my club to come up with a way to display continuously scrolling Sailwave results on an unattended PC monitor in the clubhouse. I’ve looked at the Scroller effect and it seems fine though I wonder how well it works for big events with lots of competitors.
So my question is what, if anything, do other clubs use and how well does it work? Is Scroller the answer or is there an alternative?
The problem I had with using the build in Scroller was that it meant publishing the results once without the scroller for the club website and once with the scroller for the in-club display. This would be too much to expect for Race Officers to cope with !
I’d like to display all 4 races we run on a Sunday, and that means 4 separate tabs to show as well.
So, I’ve been looking at add-ins to go in the browser. The closest I’ve got so far is using the Firefox Add-ins “ScrollyFox” and “Tab Slideshow”. This would be OK if they were in sync, i.e. It moved to the next tab when it had scrolled to the bottom, but they’re not.
However, I can see the scrolling becoming very frustrating for the impatient (like the scrolling train times on the platform that always seems to scroll just before you identify your train!). I’d wondered about some sort of user control such as Leap Motion Controller. I’ve not a clue if I could get it to work and I can envision members all frantically waving their arms around trying to see their own race and result! but it might be fun to try.
Thanks for those thoughts. Any form of user interaction is only going to result in a fracas in the bar so that’s not going to work for my club!
I must declare an interest here. Via some other work I’ve been doing I have the components of a web application that could, in broad terms, accept an uploaded Sailwave series file and display it as scrolling results. See http://www.chichesterharbourraceweek.sailevent.net/roll/ for an example.
But I don’t want to reinvent the wheel so I’m not going to embark on that project if there is a viable alternative. However, if there is no such viable alternative and also my concept has some appeal then I might just be persuaded!
That is a nice display, but it violates the Sailwave “Deal” which is: This free software in return for a Sailwave logo linked to sailwave.com on your event or club website and a restriction that the Sailwave link in the results footer shall not be removed regardless of media or reformatting. It can be found on the top right of the Sailwave home page.
I’m sure that it was not on purpose.

This is a good example of a simple but effective event page and this is their club results page

It has the Sailwave link in the results footer removed as well!!
I have previously discussed the The Deal with Jon and explained that it seemed to me unreasonable that Sailwave should have more exposure on the rolling results than other companies and organisations that also contributed money, goods or services to help the event. There is not the room to credit them all on every results page so you will note that the rolling programme includes a credits page thanking all contributors including Sailwave.
I felt that this, along with a donation from Chichester Harbour Federation, was a fair compromise. Jon may disagree!
Nevertheless a deal is a deal and so, in the interests of peace and harmony, you will now find that Sailwave is liberally credited throughout the SailEvent pages.
