Searching any part of sail numbers

Recently I did the results for the Laser Masters event at Paignton. The finishing line team refused to use 6 figures but only used the last 4 digits. ie 183(4321) etc. No problem thought I and configured the 7 or 8 fleets (radials, full. Grand Masters.Great Grand, Old farts etc etc) using the 6 digits.

However when it came to inputting results searching doesn’t work on any part of the number.Thinking logically would this feature cause more problems? Using the Inputting results wizard would be good if this feature worked.

The way round this is to only enter last 4 digits to begin with then stick with them. I suggested only using the first 4 digits which would search fine but I was told this was too difficult a finish line recorder.

Hi Steve,

using last four digits of Laser sail numbers is the way it has been

done at all the Laser events I have been involved with in the last
few years - RYA Youth Nationals, Skadia Sail for Gold & Laser
Worlds last year. Sailwave handles this

On the first window of the Sail number wizard there is an option to

set the use of the last N digits towards the bottom of the window

A word of warning. Using first 4 digits won’t work, at a top event you’ll see a lot of boats with the same numbers. At my club we even have boats with the same last 4 digits as a scorer found to his cost last month. If the finish team are overwhelmed by digits it’s likely they’ll misread numbers anyway, they need enough people and an entry list.

Ian,

Well made. At all major events I have done in the last few years, in

particular when Laser & 420 have been present, I have always
made available to the race team an entry list and highlighted any
duplicate last 3 or 4 digits. At least if the race team are aware of
duplicates whether they are whole sail numbers (different classes or
sailors who haven’t changed the number after buying a set from
anther sailor) or last 4-digits they will be better prepared to
sort the problem out.

Jon Eskdale has written a utility that makes this easy to do by

reading data directly from Sailwave files, originally I used to use
cut & paste to Excel but it was time consuming. The utility also
allows data to be sorted on up to 3 fields.

Note - I would never put shortened sail numbers into Sailwave

Kind regards,
