Selection by range of values

Hello, SUG!

Sailwave looks better than ever and I hope to use it for ALL of our
regattas in 2006. Yes, Southern Yacht Club is back and planning a
full schedule for next year!

My reason for posting is to gauge the interest in adding the ability
to 'Select Competitors' using a range of values, rather than just
matching fields exactly. I know this has been on the wish list for a
while, but for us, it has become the final stumbling block to
implementing Sailwave across the board.

For those unfamiliar with the issue, there is presently not an easy
way to divide a handicap class into fleets based on rating 'bands'.
(I.e., PHRF-A is 99 sec/mi or lower; PHRF-B is 102-147 sec/mi, PHRF-C
is 150 or higher, etc.) Presently each entrant must be edited
individually and assigned to a fleet. For some regattas, we need
to 'play-around' with our rating bands in order to get the most even
and competitive fleets. This is not just an issue for a few boats
that fall 'in-between', because we sometimes need to change the
overall number of fleet divisions as well.

Ideally, this function would be applied via a 'wizard' specifically
streamlined to assign handicap boats into various fleets. Selection
by a range of values has other uses as well and would be an excellent
feature to have in the Select Competitors window.

As I've said, this is a key issue for our RC - and I feel it's an
important and useful feature - so, I hope to urge Colin & SUG to make
this a priority!

Thank you,
Kett Cummins

Hello,

FYI,
The One Big Think guys who write a regatta managment suite have handled that issue of rating bands etc etc on the front end with their software which manages on line registration, fee colection and data entry.

Why do you think this feature should drop down to the scoring program?

Hi Kett
Agree that this would be useful but in the meantime, export to & import from Excel works REALLY
well.

- export your data from SW to excel (including the rating data)
- sort in Excel by the rating/PHRF values
- populate a column with your fleet/band
- import back into SW

Easy as pie!!!

Regards
Ralph

The "Set competitor field" feature is already there. I'm just
suggesting that selecting by a *range*, would give it many more uses.

1bigthink has an interesting concept. No pricing shown - any idea on
the per-event cost?

I think it's about 9-10% plus each sailor pays a fee for storing data on their system.

Try sailregattas.com We use it at www.sailcrac.com (my site) or www.sailregattas.com... Its the same system that Annapolis yacht club

US Sailing has plans... (three years in the making) though for a similar service.

Here's another idea: Instead of using logical operators (<,>,etc.) to
specify a range in the Select Competitors window, allow multiple
selections directly from the main scoring grid (using CTRL+click,
SHIFT+click, etc.) and then apply the Set Competitor Field function to
that selected group of competitors.

Hi Kett,

It's something I do keep meaning to do but never seem to get to. I'll bump
it up the list a bit.

Hi Kett,

You're right. I could have done that from day 1 and not used expressions
(it's the way most other software works) but I took the view that it's be a
pain when adding competitors to a series - the various lists - e.g. for
starts would be out of date. By using expressions they are always accurate
and it's easy to push them around. I do something think about having lists
as well but have never actually done anything about it.
