Series Scoring appendix 5.2 vs 5.3

Hi
we run 10/11 race series spread over summer and winter.

is it it possible to change the series scoring properties so that appendix 5.3 is used for the series scoring rather than appendix 5.2

IE a DNF/DNC result will give a score for the number of race entries +1, rather than the number of series entries +1?

thanks

Using A5.3 is an option. The version I use is pre-2021 so someone else
will have to say where that option is located now.

I’m answering to correct the principle expressed. As of 2021 any boats
entered in any race of a series shall be scored in the series (RRS
A2.2). I’d interpret that to mean that “entered for the race” and
“entered for the series” are now the same. So, “race entries +1” would
be the same as “series entries +1”.

Of course, that really doesn’t matter because A5.3 refers to “number of
boats that came to the starting area” not entries.

The idea is simple - a boat’s performance should be measured against the
boats she actually competed against. For a regatta (a series held on
consecutive days) it is probably fair to assume that any boats that
entered will sail and that that number won’t change from race to race.
This simplifies things for the RC as they do not need to count the
number of boats that came to the starting area to determine if some
entered boats did not come out and compete.

For a longer series (used to be “longer than a regatta”) that isn’t
always a reasonable assumption. So, the “base” reference is “came to the
starting area” rather than “entered.” That requires the RC to determine
the number of boats that came to the starting area. Personally, I think
A5.3 is always fairer and since the RC is supposed to determine any
boats that are DNC or DNS anyway I don’t see any additional work if
using A5.3 instead of A5.2.

Under A5.3 DNF is “came to starting area +1” while DNC would be “entries
+1” so they would not be scored the same under A5.3.

Good sailing,

Hi Daniel,

Yes Sailwave can score according to RRS A5.3.

To change the scoring so that RRS A5.3 is used, open Scoring system and select he Scoring codes tab. In the bottom left of the window is a little hand icon, click on it and a drop down list of scoring options appear. For RRS A5.3 choose “WS Appendix A long series”

By default Sailwave scores according to RRS A5.2 for all new series and when an old series is opened the scoring system set-up saved in the file as it was when the file was saved. This is so if a file is re-opened and the results re-scored the scoring used previously is used.

Kind regards,
Huw

Perfect thanks team - much appreciated.

Since the renumbering of Appendix A and the introduction of A 5.3 perhaps it would be useful to have the wordingshown when the hand icon is selected to something like the below;

Perhaps something for the next release.

Best regards,

J Briggs.
