Simplifying the old ECHO and NHC Handicapping Series for my new NHC Only Series

Jon,

With much relief, after all the work involved, I have persuaded my fellow club members to proceed in 2015 using the RYA NHC handicapping system with Sailwave.

What I want to do now is to simplify my existing series, which I plan to use as the template for the April 2015 Series, and eliminate many of the now redundant “Fleets” (using the Sailwave definition) which I had set up to run the 2013 and 2014 seasons results in parallel – thus demonstrate the differences between using ECHO and NHC. I had set up all of those additional Fleets by way of Alias’s.

I also used 2 divisions, one called Starting Class 1 and Starting Class 2, this to facilitate using a different start time for the 2 Classes, and because we award prizes by Class as well as overall.

I have set up the 5 Race 2015 GSC April Series Combined Fleet, using the 10 Race September/October 2014 Series as the template (which had the extra race to show the next race handicap), and simply deleted all the races excluding the 11th race, now Race 1 which has all the RYA NHC Handicaps – but only for the RYA NHC Fleet

I now want to change the Scoring System to RYA NHC (it was previously ECHO) and shrink the current list of competitors/entries from 135, being our 45 boat fleet (plus 2 Alias’s each of 45) to just 1 Fleet, being only the 45 boats in one combined Fleet using the Starting Class to split them for prize purposes e.g. between Class 2 and Class 1

In the attached blw file, you will see that I have 4 Fleets, Class 1 (ECHO), Class 2 (ECHO), then the 2 alias Fleets, e.g. Combined(ECHO), and RYA NHC (also a combined Fleet).

I looked at changing the Scoring System for each Fleet to RYA NHC and thereby dropping the last of my 4 original Fleets i.e. the RYA NHC Fleet (Alias), but only that Fleet has the new RYA NHC Handicaps computed from all of the past 2 seasons results, so I would need to manually adjust the starting handicaps of each of the 45 boats to pick up their latest RYA NHC Handicap (R1).

I then looked at each competitor file individually, and see that I might (not brave enough to try just yet!) be able to change their status (from being an Alias) and so, for the entire RYA NHC Fleet, I could simply clear them from being an Alias, whatever that does to them?, and having set them up as non-aliased (or cleared alias) competitors, then delete all of the other Fleets leaving only the RYA NHC Fleet with its 45 entries, and with all its handicaps in place. I am just a bit reluctant to do that when I don’t know which is the correct way or what that will do?

What I am wondering is “Which is the best way to achieve what I am trying to do” and/or “Is there a simpler way”?

This is probably showing my acute ignorance of Sailwave, but I am not a computer expert in any way, and dread the task of manually inputting more data with all the risks of omission, transposition and commission that this provides.

Grateful for your advice as always.

Patrick

Hi Patrick

You can very easily remove the alias status of a competitor or a group of competitors using the Tools - Set competitor field e.g.

Inline images 1

This will remove the alias of all RYA NHC fleet

You can also easily delete large blocks of competitors - The best way to do this is first mark them as excluded using the tools set competitor field again e.g.

Inline images 2

Then use the Edit - Delete competitors using excluded competitors e.g.

Inline images 3

Hope this helps

Thanks Jon,

That’s all fine, and I did exactly what you suggested without any problems, many thanks for this and the shortcut to doing it boat by boat.

I see that I still have not changed the Scoring system and so have the 4 Fleets still in there with ECHO as the default Rating System, three of which (using ECHO as the Rating System for handicapping) have now been deleted, with the override to NHC for the RYA NHC Fleet (now the only remaining Fleet). Can I change the Rating system (Under Scoring System) to NHC, and then delete the Fleets other than the RYA NHC Fleet in the Fleets tab?

I attach snips of the screens when I change as I think necessary?

I don’t want to do anything which deletes the NHC handicaps for the next race (or changes them).

This, I hope will be my last pestering of you!

Patrick

Hi Patrick

You can delete all the fleets it won’t affect the ratings that are stored.

Then just setup the default as required

So you should not need to worry - but if you are ever unsure then just take a copy of the blw file before you play with it, and if it all goes wrong just restore your copy.
