Skipper handicap formulae

Hello all,

Please help. I are trying to put together a skipper handicap series for
a one design class. I use Sailwave (thanks Colin!) to score the scratch
results and input the elapsed times; ~40 minutes per race.

Has anyone any suggestions on how & what formula to use to calculate
individual skipper ratings which can then be used with Sailwave's custom
scoring system? What formulae are being used out there?

I am thinking of using C=E*R where C is Correct Time; E Elapsed Time and
R is the Rating value. Thus the R value should be somewhere between 0 &
1. Maybe I also need to weight R in the ratio Old R : New 4:1 so that R
doesn't fluctuate too wildly should a skipper have a exceptionally good
(bad) race.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, at Burghfield sailing club we run a wednesday evening pursuit race based around moving personal handicaps

http://www.burghfieldsc.org.uk/wednesdays/default.htm

I don't know the technicalities of how it's done but it works brilliantly.

cheeeers... simon

Hi Rob,

As far as I know, there is no standard personal handicap calculations as
recommended by ISAF. Every cluib has it's own way of calulcating them.
Sailwave does calculate Rwin which can be useful - the rating the competitor
sailed to assuming the winner sailed to their rating. I have personal
handicaps down as a big chunk of work somewhere in the development plan.
What you can do it having calculating a PH in a spreadsheet or by hand,
enter a race-specific rating into Sailwave via Edit+Result.

Regards,
Colin J
