We use a sliding rating system called ‘9-6-3-0-2’ that results in most boats getting a new handicap after each race. The way it works is this. Each boat starts the season with their standard PHRF rating. Then, after each race the rating is adjusted:
1st place has 9 seconds subtracted from their handicap
2nd place has 6 seconds subtracted from their handicap
3rd place has 3 seconds subtracted from their handicap
4th place remains unchanged
5th place and below have 2 seconds added to their handicap
I’ve been told that Sailwave can handle this type of rating system using an external spreadsheet. Has anyone implemented something like this? It would be nice to not have to reinvent the wheel on this.
A related question is how to display the new handicap. For each race in a series we would want to display the handicap with the results when posted. Will
SailWave save this information on a per-race basis?

Hi Joe - I don’t know if anyone has implement that as yet - but yes Sailwave does support an excel template system to adjust the rating for personal handicapping
Each competitor in Sailwave has a rating which is stored as a default rating and also a rating for each race. Sailwave automatically loads the template with the competitor data and once the calculations are performed then it automatically takes the newly calculated rating and puts this back into the rating to be used for the next race. So although Excel is used to do the calculation the end user has to have no knowledge of Excel. Just the person that creates the template has to understand Excel. You can play with the NHC example included with Sailwave in the external/Debug mode to see how it works
To your second question - yes Sailwave stores them on a per race basis and has a column that can be displayed with the results to show the rating that will be used for the next race.
If you can give me an example with just a few boats say 6 or 7 - I can give you some more advice
