Not specifically a Sailwave question, but how do others score a sole starter
/ finisher in a race please?
Many thanks

Hi Kit,
We don't do anything special at MYC; that boats gets 1st and everybody else
gets DNC.
Regards,
Colin
When i looked at this earlier this year i couldnt find any rules that
explicitly covered
this and therefore came to the conclusion that in the absence of any Club
specific rule
they should score a first place if they finish or a dnf if they dont.
We used to have a rule/understanding that said there had to be at least 3
boats in a race but
this has disappeared and i'm not sure why someone who turns up for a race
shouldnt get the
points for taking part just because no-one else turns up. This has become a
little bit more
of a problem for us since we introduced slow/fast fleets since occasionally
one of the fleets
may only have 1 boat yet the other fleet has enough for a sensible race. Its
not common but
occasionaly if the weather is lowsy and the start time not very friendly it
happens.

Hi John,
Taking this one step further we sometimes (unfortunately) have the situation
where a race is put on for fleets A and B but only boats from Fleet A turn
up. The question is: should that race count as a 'sailed' race for Fleet B
for the purpose of calculating the number of discards - i.e. score
everybody DNC - or - should that race for Fleet B be treated like an
abandoned race - i.e. an unsailed race. My inclination is the former - if
the club takes the trouble to put on a race and nobody starts then tough -
they get DNC... what would/do you do? Sailwave is a bit fuzzy about this
at the moment and I want to clarify it. There don't seem to be any specific
rules about it, so by induction...

A sole starter is entitled to score points for 1st place unless the sailing instructions impose a minimum number of starters to make the race valid. Just because no one else turns up for a race, it does not mean that the one who does should be prejudiced.

And even worse what happens if the OOD for the day sails in Fleet B and
wants
to claim his duty points. We actually had the situation where the OOD was
from fleet
B and one other person turned up but decided not to race since they were the
only
person who would be sailing in that race! I'm currently trying to re-write
our rules
since Duty points were added as an understanding rather than ever being
written into the rules.
For now i've stopped using Fleets and score each fleet in a seperate file
unless
there is a need for some overall scoring. Currently i treat the race as not
being sailed unless
someone can claim duty points for it.
Does it actually make any difference? Either everyone gets a DNC added to
there points or it adds
one more discard and so the DNC would be discarded.

Probably not under normal circumstances; I want to get Sailwave to do what
Appendix A implies; but I'm not sure what that is... Can simplify the
scenario - championship event - good social the night before - nobody makes
it to the start line...

Colin
