Solo class tie breaks

Hi,
We could not get Sailwave to correctly break the Solo results to
their SI's.

Solo Class - Series ties will be decided by reference to the
discarded races (if any) of the helmspersons concerned.
If that fails to decide, the tie will be broken by number of first
places, etc.
If this fails to decide, then the tie will be broken by the result
of the last race eligible to be sailed. This changes RRS Appendix A."

Would this be possible?

Thanks in advance
Ian

Hi Ian,

Solo Class - Series ties will be decided by reference to the
discarded races (if any) of the helmspersons concerned.

Can you explain that a bit more... an example would be particularly useful.

If that fails to decide, the tie will be broken by number of first
places, etc.
If this fails to decide, then the tie will be broken by the result
of the last race eligible to be sailed. This changes RRS Appendix A."

That part appears to be standard App A...?

Colin

Hi Colin,
Sailwave produced
3rd 5,-13,2 =7pts,
4th 3,-5,4 =7pts
which uses the most 1st, 2nd (A8.1)

I swapped these by hand, as by the solo SI's
3rd 3,-5,4 =7pts
4th 5,-13,2 =7pts,

Minus denotes discard

When there is a tie, the best discarded result is used to resolve the
tie first.
At least this is how I read it.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Can you tell me exactly what the SIs say. Do you mean that your first tie
break is to score the series normally but include discards. If so I could

Hi Colin et al
We have the same situation for resolving series ties in our club
(Chipstead).
The use of discards to resolve ties is pretty common because the ISAF rules
in Appendix A simply do not work well for long series where many discards
are allowed. For example in our club a typical summer series runs over 24
weeks of races but we require only 9 to count.
Our SIs say that "Ties will be broken using ISAF rule A8.1 and, if scores
remain level, in favour of the boat with the best discard. Successive
discards will be examined until the tie is broken."
This method works much better than the ISAF method since the latter assumes
only a small proportion of the races may be discarded.
Regards
Geoff

In special "club events" where you expect people to enter only 9 of 24 regattaes, it would be better to join the latest regattaes..... So, to "solve" this "problem" you might find A 8.2 "unfair", and the method in your SI's might be more fair:"in favour of the boat with the best discard"

Hi Martin,

Colin: You have to think about implementing "everything", or only
what RRS(+) includes..... Otherwise Sailwave might become
ENORMOUS, and not so user-friendly....

Yes, I do worry about it. Interestingly, when I started Sailwave, I made
the incorrect assumption that scoring club racing would be easy and scoring
World Championbships (etc) hard - it is in fact the other way around. It
was true at out club too - we had all sorts of wonderful little rules but
when asked nobody actually knew why they existed! - so we just simplified to
AppA (where long series style DNC is mandatory now for long series, although
"long" is not defined). The same sailors still win...!

I would *love* to say that Sailwave just does AppA but I don't think i could
get away with it...

Colin

Hi Geoff/Ian,

There is a tick box in Sailwvae to include discards when doing A8.1 - is
that of use to you?

Hi Colin et al
We have the same situation for resolving series ties in our club
(Chipstead).
The use of discards to resolve ties is pretty common because the
ISAF rules
in Appendix A simply do not work well for long series where many discards
are allowed.
This method works much better than the ISAF method since the
latter assumes
only a small proportion of the races may be discarded.

Geoff

Hi Ian,

Can you tell me exactly what the SIs say. Do you mean that your first tie
break is to score the series normally but include discards. If so I could
add that; it's a good idea. Personally I don't like discards at all; I
would like to see all events sailed without them...

Be useful to see the SIs anyway.

Many thanks Colin
I think you are right - if the tick option of including discards is applied
to A8.1 then (I think) that implements the tie breaker rules for our club.
By the way the comment that the enormous number of facilities being included
in Sailwave is in danger of running counter to it remaining user-friendly is
a very valid one. In our club we have adopted an easy to use an electronic
signing-on (via database) & scoring program designed to match precisely -
and only - the specific requirements of our club in order to make the less
computer literate people comfortable when using the system. We find it
necessary rotate the race officer duties between a large band of people and
this does not give them time to learn their way around the system. So we
are currently using our own (intuitive) program on the day and we later
transfer the data manually into Sailwave to score the series. This is quick
on the race day because the boats are already entered in the PC by the
competitors themselves within minutes of the race start and the program then
simply prompts the race officer for the elapsed times to facilitate instant
scoring after the race. This is what works well for our specific needs and
at some time I hope to get round to implementing an interface (preferably
via Excel) to draw the individual race results into Sailwave but I have not
yet thought how to do this.
So I believe the simpler you can keep Sailwave for use by race officers
previously unfamiliar with the system the better.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Geoff

Hi Geiff,

This is what works well for our specific needs and
at some time I hope to get round to implementing an interface (preferably
via Excel) to draw the individual race results into Sailwave but
I have not yet thought how to do this.

Have a look on the Sailwave web site documentation pages about rating file
formats. Many clubs are now importing race results fomr electronic devices
etc. The are some links to example devices from the RaceManagement section
of the documentation too.

Whenever I do a tweak to Sailwave I think long and hard about how to do it
with imcreasing complexity - sometimes this results in significant rework
rather then just adding yet another tick box; I am dedicated to simplicity.
I think this is why Sialwave is so popular; it's relatively simple to use...

PS: ticking that box doesn't quite do your rules but it's pretty close and
since it's a tie breaker, I would say close enough.. My preference would be
to let ties stand but I don't write the rules... I especially don't
like A8.2 - it's so arbitrary; I've seen it justtified by claiming that folk
that do better at the end of a series are physically more capable but a
counter argument is that folk that do better at the start of a serie are
psychologically more competent... The now abandoned 8.2 about
sho-beat-who-the-most was a much better rule (IMO) and in fact could be used
to score a series in itself - there is merit in scoring in that way rather
than accumulating points; again IMO...

Colin

Colin,
These are the sailing instructions, regarding ties.

"
14 TIES

Race Ties to be scored as Appendix A7.
Series Ties:

GP14 Class - Series ties will be decided in accordance with Appendix A8
as amended at 1 June 2002. (Best scores with no excluded scores used &
remaining ties decided on the last race including excluded scores)

Solo Class - Series ties will be decided by reference to the discarded
races (if any) of the helmspersons concerned.
If that fails to decide, the tie will be broken by number of first
places, etc.
If this fails to decide, then the tie will be broken by the result of
the last race eligible to be sailed. This changes RRS Appendix A.
"

Sailwave has an option that allows discards to be considered when breaking
the tie using A8. So I think what you need is already present. Do you use
ISAF rule A9 for scoring DNC's, DNS's DNF's etc. this will also make a
difference to your results.

As a comment I would hate to see Colin spend his time coding every variation
of tie break that clubs can dream up. In general the tie breaking system
you use makes little difference. We recently ran a regatta in which the
class association insisted on using their own modified scoring system. We
re-scored the last 10 years of World Championships to make sure that
Sailwave was working correctly, the only difference between ISAF and the
class scoring system was that 24th and 25th places would be reversed three
years ago and that one of the World championships was scored incorrectly!
Sailwave got right.

Keep up the good work Colin.....

This method works much better than the ISAF method since the latter assumes
only a small proportion of the races may be discarded.

Hi Ian,

Can you tell me exactly what the SIs say. Do you mean that your first tie
break is to score the series normally but include discards. If so I could
add that; it's a good idea. Personally I don't like discards at all; I
would like to see all events sailed without them...

Be useful to see the SIs anyway.

Colin

Hi Colin,
Sailwave produced
3rd 5,-13,2 =7pts,
4th 3,-5,4 =7pts
which uses the most 1st, 2nd (A8.1)

I swapped these by hand, as by the solo SI's
3rd 3,-5,4 =7pts
4th 5,-13,2 =7pts,

Minus denotes discard

When there is a tie, the best discarded result is used to resolve the
tie first.
At least this is how I read it.

Thanks,
Ian

Can you explain that a bit more... an example would be particularly
useful.

That part appears to be standard App A...?

Hi Colin,

I don't think we sorted it, but its not a major issue, it's just the
Solo class, that uses this system, perhaps they should fall into line
with the new rules.

OK, thanks, I'll forget about it for now, If it becomes a bigee for you,
let me know. but yes I agree, it'd be useful if folk moved to standard ISAF
Appendix A for tie breaking since it's a fairly minor thing really. But not
minor to implement... Interestingly one of the the Authors of App A has
been playing around with Sailwave and has some useful feedback; in
particular he would like to see all values defaulted to AppA values...

Colin
