Over the last 12 months I have been experiencing frustrating problems when running Sailwave on Microsoft Vista; I have also noticed that other people have had some problems as well. My problems concerned Sailwave not seeing changes to files I had made to files in sub-directories of Sailwave, my specific problems were making changes to rating files and template files.
Whilst waiting for results to arrive here at the RYA Volvo Youth Championships 2011, I was introduced to a utility that can let one know which files are being opened by an application [ProcMon from a company called SysInternals]. Using this utility I found out that even though I had made changes to the rating files in the Sailwave\Ratings sub-directory Microsoft Vista was using a 'shadow' file in the UserName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Sailwave\Ratings!
This is a file permissions problem. Vista or Sailwave is thinking that Sailwave wants to open the file with write permissions but because the files under \Program files have access permissions for read only for normal users, even if they are listed as an administrator, a copy of the file in question is created with write permissions in the 'VirtualStore' location if it does not exist or is used if the file already exists. My solution was to delete the file I was having problems with in the 'VirtualStore' location. Then on opening Sailwave again I then picked up the changes I had made, because a copy of my changed file was created in the 'VirtualStore' location.
Another work round is put copies of the Sailwave sub-directories in the \Program Data directory under a directory called Sailwave and then change the defaults paths to the rating, template and style file folders to be under \Program Data\.
Hope this helps others as it has been a frustrating year.
