Something's fishy with High Point scoring in v1.49

Hey, I'm trying to see what difference, if any, using a high point scoring
system will have on the Laser series I'm scoring. This is a series with
typically five races every Sunday, with 11 Sundays planned.

As it is Fall in New England, one can imagine the weather is variable, to
say the least. I'm anticipating ups and downs in headcount over the course
of the series, and wanted to investigate recommending high point scoring for
the next series, in the Spring.

US Sailing has a couple of official statements that high point scoring is
something to consider in a long series such as this one. At the end of
Appendix A in the US Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is mention of high
point scoring, and the suggestion to visit the US Sailing web site for more
information. For those interested, that link is http://tinyurl.com/ofsp.
There is more detailed information on high point scoring systems in Chapter
14 of the US Sailing Race Management Handbook, which can be perused at
http://tinyurl.com/ofrr.

All this is well and good, but when I use either Rinderle B or Austrian high
point scoring on the recorded finishes with version 1.49, the resulting
scores don't pass my smell test. Something's fishy. Here's the Rinderle B
published web page, http://tinyurl.com/ozyu, and here's the original .blw
file http://tinyurl.com/ozxh for review by anyone interested.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

-Ian Duff.

Hi Ian,

As far as I know both RinderleB and Austrian system work OK - I know they
are used a fair bit - what do you find fishy...? What they are doing (as
far as I remmber) is rewarding getting good results when there are lots of
boats more than the same results when there are fewer results; i.e. a 2nd
place in a 20 boat fleet is better than a 2nd place in a 3 boat fleet; which
may or may not be true on the day, but it's a good way to try and even
things out on average.

Regards,
Colin

Actually your problem is quite simple. When using a high point system you
have to change the settings on the scoring codes. You had DNC and DNF set to
boats in series +1 this caused your problem. If you reset these to 0 for DNC
and 5 for DNF you will find everything works fine. I will mail you back the
BLW file directly with the corrections made.

Awesome! Thanks! That fish smell just went away! The _problem_ wasn't quite
simple, the _scorer_ is!

I got your revised (improved!) file, too, BTW, Also thanks!

Now, a question. Why 5 for DNF? Would 1 work, too? I would think that
anything more than 0 would work.

It depends on your SI's. We use 0 for DNC and DSQ, 5 for DNF, DNS, OCS, etc.
Remember last place is always 10.5. We don't want to penalize people more
heavily than that when they made the effort to show up. Some clubs use 2.5
for DSQ for the same reason.
