Sort Rules (1.74)

Hi Colin
Been having difficulty in sorting SW by Sail number.
My numbers were imported from a csv file and include MNA identification with a space between the
alpha and number.
I was assuming that the data would sort by alpha then numeric, not so!!

Eventually worked out why the sort resulted in the following
GBR 000
GBR 2
GER 3
POL 6
FRA 007
DEN 7
GBR 9
GER 11
ITA 12
etc

I am surprised that the first 3 alpha are ignored & how does SW sort on 'real' numbers rather than
the normal numeric convention (i.e 01, 02, 03, 2, 21, 22, 3, 31)

Also, having imported race positions, I could not sort by race position until I had scored the
series

Any thoughts & solutions?

Regards
Ralph

You could get around sorting problem, by using Word to insert another Comma... (Search & replace - My favorite tool...). Remember another coloumn heading: Nation. Anyway, the sort algorithm should be able to take alphanumeric. Sometimes I need to use only letters (like: nonumber).

What do you mean by import race positions? are you importing the "Rank" ? If so, it could be an idea to import the rank to the note field...

Regards,
Martin

Hi Martin

I have also discovered that search & replace is one of the most underrated and underused tools in
Microsoft.
Kiel displayed their results as text in one cell to two decimal places. Find & replace to get rid of
.00 certainly made life easier.

"What do you mean by import race positions?......"
I am using the import tool to save inputting individual race results manually.
This is a csv file with columns for raceno, sailno, code & position.
The position and code are imported into the race column in SW which is where I have my (temporary)
problem

You have mentioned inserting another comma.
Does this mean that you work from a text file?
I am creating my original data in a spreadsheet (Excel) and then saving it as a .csv file.
This seems to work very well for me

Regards
Ralph

Many users wanted to be able to sort the sail number column so that the
numbers appeared in a proper integer-like collating sequence, and I have to
agree that can be useful (a opposed to the not so useful string collating
sequence). But I can also see the need to honour the prefixes, if present,
is also useful. I'll need to optionalise or show two columns; one with and
one without the prefix. Leave it with me.

Also, having imported race positions, I could not sort by race
position until I had scored the
series

You need to change the veiw to show finishes and then you should see and
sort on places...

Hi Colin
Thanks for the reply - belay my original request!!

I only raised the query because my test data included the MNA code and number in the same cell.
Looking at my other test data, published info for Kiel also shows all race results in one cell (what
a pain it has been putting each race into its own cell :frowning:

The circumstances of my request would not therefore appear in SW
When using SW, the logical process would be to put the MNA code into the Nationality column & so
changes are not required.

There is an issue however when scoring an International Regatta such as Kiel where the number on the
sail could well be duplicated, triplicated etc.

If we are using the sail no. wizard & there are duplicated numbers, as long as the MNA code appears
on the selection options then there is no need to make any changes

Will leave it with you unless others have a view

Regards
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

There is a tick box in the sailno wizard to ignore (or not) alphanumeric
chars in sailnos. I propose it make it affect more than the sailno wizard;
i.e. if it off sort the sailno col alphanumerically and if it's on sort it
as integers. Putting the MNA in the Nat col and the digits in the SailNo
col is also a good solution.

That's a good idea.
I think that will also be helpful in club racing when different helms sail the same boat
(or helm & crew swap round during a series)

"There is a tick box in the sailno wizard ....."
Must spend more time entering results myself, will stop me asking obvious questions
