traditionally, PY suggested an (up to) 4% allowance for symmetric spinnaker and a slightly lower figure ?2.5% for asymmetric. Byron appears to apply a similar figure, though in my experience no two Byron spinnaker/non-spinnaker offsets are the same. Emsworth Slipper Club use 3.5%. Down here in the far west we tried to factor in spinnaker size and still ended up with about 3.5%. I had the impression Bart's Bash was a fun event and exactitude was not the main thrust. Set them a course where spinnakers don't give any advantage. I had one of them on Tuesday!
Many thanks Malcolm, those percentages are very useful! Will let you know what is decided!

Many thanks to all of you for your useful suggestions. In the end nobody used a spinnaker. However it emerged that they all have, squirrelled away somewhere, a PHHS rating to be applied with a spinnaker as well as another rating without a spinnaker and I have asked them to find both for next season. Our Bart’s Bash events included races for dinghies and cruisers, a barbecue and boat jumble, and we all had a splendid time!
Regards,
Susan
