Stand alone medal race

At a recent event, we decided that the top five finishers in the 29er class would sail a medal race for positions one through five. Boats who finished the fleet racing series would keep their scores for sixth, seventh, eighth places and so on. Scores do not carry through for the top five. The medal race determines everything.

It would be nice to present this on a single SW scoring sheet, but after playing around with this for awhile, the solution eludes me. Anyone have an idea how to freeze the scores for the first nine races and show the top five in race 10 (medal)?

Thanks.

Hi John,

Unfortunately I cannot see a way of doing what you want currently

in Sailwave automatically. I would have to manually edit the HTML
output from Sailwave to get what you have described.

I know the RS:X class have a new scoring paradigm after the

Opening series, made up of Q-series and F-series, as published at

Hi John,

I think this is possible - to save me the time of setting up a lot of dummy data could you send me your blw file so that I can demonstrate to you.

Hi John,

You can manually set the Rank with the Set competitor field. In your case it takes 5 changes to do this.

Here is the process:

  • score your results ( this will be the last time that you should score/rescore the results)
  • add the medal race
  • add the medal race results or points
  • set the Rank field of the medal race boats as per the screen capture below
  • publish your results ( you will notice that the Nett points are no longer in sequential order)
I’ve attached two sailwave files; one before the medal race and one after the medal race data was added. This data was used as part of a Sailwave training seminar.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter and John,

There is an easier way to edit the rank value for the competitors

involved in the medal race. Right click the rank for a competitor
and select edit cell followed by entering the rank value
appropriate for that competitor. Just in case the rank values are
not in order click the rank column header to sort on rank.

I think this method will save time and be less prone to error as

one does not have to type in at least for Lasers 6-digit sail
numbers.

Kind regards,

Huw

Peter & John,

Thank you for this post, it has helped me see a way to score an

event I will be doing later this year. I still have to work out
how to do things if there are races for those that do not make the
medal race/races, i.e. they have more fleet races.

I think it will work if the extra fleet races take place, as they

usually do, before the medal race/races.

Kind regards,

You can save a few keystrokes you don’t even have to right click and select edit cell you can just press enter or Press F2 (for those used to Excel)

Another possibility is

In the setup user interface you enable the Medal race. You will get a Medalist column. Turn the display of this column on and enter a Y in the competitors in the medal race

Then sort on the medal race and use the tools seed competitor field to seed Rank starting at 1 increment by 1 for Medalist = Y

then sort on the rank column and use the tools seed competitor field to seed Rank starting at 6 increment by 1 for Medalist =

Thanks, Huw. Yes, it was the RS:X example that caught our attention. I agree: everyone is going to be doing something like this. The implementation should be quite simple in software, after everyone agrees on the preliminary flights or eliminations or whatever goes on.

Thanks for the Princes Sofia reference.

which is generally the same as you used except over 3 races with
elimination - 12 become six become 3.

As it says in the above referenced document all the Olympic

classes are looking at final day racing formats but so far as I am
aware only the RS:X class has published anything.

I am scoring the RS:X Youth Worlds later this year and by then

hopefully Sailwave will have been enhanced to be able to cope.

The recent Princes Sofia Regatta had different format paradigms

for the 470, Finn & RS:X classes which start on page 25 of
the SI’s available at
http://www.trofeoprincesasofia.org/uploaded_files/Document_5398_20170323201623_en.pdf.

All scoring software is going to have to be enhanced to score the

new paradigms.

I suspect all major regattas will end up with a final race

‘shoot-out’ where winner takes all, like Olympic’s 100 metre
final. Whether there will be a single race shoot-out or a small
number of elimination races before the final race shoot-out, like
RS:X class, remains to be seen. Probably be a mixture.

Kind regards,

Huw

Thanks you all, especially Peter van Muyden for the suggestions.

Here's what I did:

1. Score first nine races.
2. Add a race, rename it to "Medal".
3. Manually enter the five places in race 10.
4. Manually change the "Rank" field for the five boats.
5. Sort if necessary, print, save, publish. But do not rescore

or you lose the whole thing and have to delete R10 and go back to
the beginning.

Somehow the javascript can't figure out what the colours are, so

that doesn’t work. Otherwise it looks pretty good. See
. I didn’t realize that we could
alter the Rank column; good to know.
