I'm looking for a software solution for longer distance races where standings are reported at various roundings / check points along the way. I haven't been able to figure out if SW supports this. Just to make clear what I want, I would like to record rounding times for all yachts at multiple points in the race and then produce standings at each of those marks.

You need to have a race for each leg and a race for the accumulated elapsed time. In the accumulated elapsed time race in Edit Start check “Accumulated Elapsed Time” and proved a comma separated list of races that make up the legs of the race. (See the screen shot below)

Yes I think Sailwave can do what you want.
R1 = start to 1st rounding/check point
R2 = start to second rounding/check mark etc
Rn = start to finish line
You will probably not want the overall series results using this
method. Your overall standings would be the results from Rn.
Kind regards,

If we think of the race as starting at A and then having waypoints B and C before finally ending at D, I'm not sure how this would work. What I would like to display is:
A-B
A-C
A-D
It sounds like you're proposing having
A-B, B-C, C-D as the individual legs and then
A-D as the accumulated elapsed time race based on those three legs. Of course, I could then create accumulated elapsed time races for A-C as well. This does open a few questions:
How you set the start time for B-C and C-D.
What happens if one boat doesn't report in at B?
It does seem to me like SailWave can't handle this in an easy manner (which is probably one reason my club uses SW for everything EXCEPT their long distance race where this is a requirement :-).

"How you set the start time for B-C and C-D." - use elapsed times, not start / finish

As you pointed out yourself, Sailwave either has the functionality or it doesn't. Everything else is some kind of a kludge. It doesn't. So, you are looking at a kludge (an automobile can act as tractor but it wasn't designed to do that and will never be good at it; same here).
I used to do a distance race every summer that had a similar situation. Interim times for each boat were recorded about halfway through the race BUT no standings were generated based on those times. You could do that by making a custom note column and entering the times into that. They would be displayed but not used. You could have multiple columns for multiple mid-points - but you wouldn't get the standings you want.
Sailwave CAN be used to do what you want, but it won't be pretty. You actually kind of define how to do it in your message. If you have 5 mid-points then set up your regatta with 6 races. All races will have the same start time but different distances. "Finish" time for the first mid-point would go into race #1 (they can be imported as CSV files). You can then print race #1 to show crossing times and standings at the first mid-point. Same for every other mid-point and the finish. Since you can show just the races you want you can suppress early mid-points that everyone has passed and later mid-points that no one has gotten to yet.
Unfortunately, this is UGLY as it requires a separate table for each mid-point. What I would want (and Sailwave cannot do) would be to have a single table with columns for the crossing times and standings for each competitor right in the table. With Sailwave I believe you're stuck with using a separate table for each mid-point and for the overall finish.
You could customize an Excel (or other) spreadsheet to do exactly what you want but of course that requires writing the appropriate macros and determining a method to get decent HTML results if you also want to post on the web (which I assume in this day and age you would want to do). For some of my club's races we have to use Excel instead of Sailwave because Sailwave doesn't have the functionality we need (I cannot even find a kludge to do what we want). I think the spreadsheet route might be your best option for getting what you want.
