Start matrix

I intend to add a start matrix publishing template which will be useful in a
multiple start per race context to show who is in which start. In a
non-flight case the cells will just have ticks, but when flights are used
the cells will show the flight allocation.

This is a mock up showing a round robin type flight case for two races
(notice the flight allocations don't change).

http://www.sailwave.com/stuff/Book1.htm

The idea is that in an Addendum C context this is published each night.

Is that good enough or is there a better way to show the allocations? I
have chosen this because it's useful in all contexts.

It's also a debug aid to see if your starts have overlaps in terms of a
competitor being included in more than one start.

Hi Colin

On the basis that the main priority is to let sailors know which groups they are sailing in
tomorrow, your proposal looks to be on the right track.

I presume competitor also includes crew as well as helm & sail number info

Not sure if you have grasped ADD C method (sorry if you have).
You will recall that the 'Topper' examples are Red sailing with Blue etc (round robin type) but ADD
C is normally each colour, sailing the same course as a single fleet/start all day.

The principles are normally that the race schedule is exactly the same each day eg
- Red sails one course, Blue sails another (Green another etc) and they race at the same times, or
- they sail the same course but red has 3 races first then Blue come out for 3 (or even two starts
per race)
Sorry if this is what you meant but wasn't sure so thought it best to double check

I have not had chance to look at what you have done re Flights/Add C yet but I am assuming that all
the variables on your proposal are determined by the user when setting up the series.
I have raised general ADD C points but I suspect that event organisers will want the option of
making changes to the various options.

With the way that the starting info is developing, I suspect that this facility will not only be
used by 'flighted' events, but be very useful for multi-start/fleet regattas, especially if we can
print out race schedules of who goes when!

Regards
Ralph

Ralph / Collin,
This is certainly something that I am using for multi-starting.

All sail in the same race, but I have defined 2 flights. one is flight Z which starts 15 minutes before the other flight E. Flight Z is all yachts with PY >= 1000 though potentially could include those < 1000 if they are new to racing, to give them a less crowded start line. This allows for a noticable wind drop in late evening which can cause the slower boats problems finishing. It works a treat.

Andy.

Hi All,

I agree the start matrix looks good, especially for checking for
overlaps. I think it would be good if individual flight starts could
be published .. i.e. separate red, blue etc start sheets, as this
would be easier for the competitors?

Otherwise I agree with Ralph's points (I think).

Ian
